Okay, so I was taking my rig apart for it's monthly dusting/cleaning/organizing (tidy up the cables, etc). After cleaning, I began putting it back together. First things first, I seat the CPU, heatsink, etc.

After it's all back together, I hit the power button and.....just a beep (the chassis instrusion beep, I'm pretty sure, since I switched fan connectors and wanted to make sure they all power up properly). the northbridge chipset fan on my K8N Neo2 Platinum spun 1 revolution and quit.

Fearing the worst, I take everything back apart, take out the cpu and find that I bent a whole row of pins putting it in. Only 1 was bent over to the side, the rest were just angled funny. So, I managed to straighten them out and, after that, it pretty much fell in exactly as it should. Just to make sure, I took it out one more time, inspected all the pins again, and reseated it a third time and, again, it fell in just as it should.

But, now my rig still won't boot up, I still only get the single revolution from the northbridge chipset fan, but i don't even get the beep anymore.

Could my cpu be fried or is this a psu issue?

Thanks,
drdeutsch

I was hoping nobody would say that...

any more optimistic opinions? :D

How about any cpus for sale? ;)

Thanks,

I had the same problem (without the bent pins fortunately) a little while ago. It was a PSU problem. Start off by testing it with nothing plugged in, then add mobo, drives, etc, etc. Could be the problem.

How do I test it with nothing plugged in? I don't have a multimeter, so....
It's an Antec Neo480, about one month old... if that was the problem, I'd almost be more pissed off than if it was the cpu...

Un-effin-believable!

So I just happen to have an extra psu laying around....
You know what I'm going to say.

thanks for your help, everybody.

ive had this problemw tih my neopower before.

turn off the supply, pull the plug. let it sit for about a minuite. power back up.

i know it sounds weird, but whenever this happens to me (normally after i change some hardware and it trips the supply somehow) this always fixes it. i have a neo2 as well, so this could very well be it.

edit: actually, no. i dont... was it the PSU or the chip?

To test out the PSU without plugging it into the mobo you´ve got to short out the PWR-ON pin with one of the ground pins. Don´t remember which one was the power on, but they´re all color coded. I´m sure someone here knows. You can short it with any piece of wire, should be fine.

to also test the psu, take a paper clip and stick one end into a ground port (black. doesnt matter which one) and take the other end and stick it into the green port (there should only be one, in case you have trouble :p )

okay, well, I put in my old PSU until I can get my Neo480 RMAd or get a new one.

But now, whenever I power on, I get a POST code and no monitor output. It is one one-second beep every 3 seconds or so. It just keeps going. Looked on the MSI website, and it seems to be a RAM problem, but I've tried reseating the RAM, switching out RAM, reseating them again, and still nothing.

So I thought maybe it's my vid card, but I've tried seating that, etc.. etc.. and nothing.

So I'm afraid it might be my CPU, but it's not the high/low siren post code as described on the website.

Any ideas on this?

Why of all days did my comp decide to take a crap on me today?

have you tried the neopower on any otehr boards? it could just be shuting the system off in an effort to save a component if it senses a problem

That I haven't done.

I should mention that I'm using an Antec 350w psu now. I have it hooked up and get this 1 beep ever 3 seconds with the cpu, ram, and vc hooked in. Still there when I eliminate the vc. Still there when I eliminate only the RAM. Still there when I eliminate both, so that points me to the CPU.
I'll try hooking the Neo480 up to my old Asus board and see if anything comes on.

I got it.

It was the RAM. Apparently it won't boot up in dual-channel mode anymore.

What could cause this? I know I haven't switched any jumpers or anything... I haven't even moved the ram. I'm running corsair twinx 2225 on my Neo2 Platinum.

Why would Dual channel quit working all of a sudden? Is there a setting in the BIOS for this?
