Nielsen Entertainment, the research company that decides if your favorite show will live or die on the major networks is planning to monitor the eSports market. The firm has created a new eSports unit, Nielsen Esports will consult in the valuation of sponsorship in the expanding market. Within the past few years, the audience is ever increasing especially among the younger enthusiasts. The public is becoming more enamored with the idea of e-athletes showcasing their "skillz." Better late than sorry.

ESports is hot -- and growing on a hockey-stick trajectory. In 2017, sector revenue is expected to increase 41%, to $696 million, hitting $1.5 billion by 2020, according to estimates by Amsterdam-based research firm Newzoo. The global audience of core eSports fans will hit 191 million in 2017, growing 50% by 2020 to 286 million, Netzoo predicts.

lol nielsen entertainment just refuses to die.. no one that watches esports gives crap about a fake ratings system.

Neilson hasn't kept up with streaming in different forms etc for yrs their numbers have been crap and the industry just hasn't had an alternative. They also only called landlines for their info giving them older people's opinions and the networks lost more of their target demographics. I doubt they can cover esports they literally wouldn't know how to get the right data.

They have never been fake just the data they collect and how they collect it is done like its the 1950's so the data is scewed heavily to old people with land lines. So it is bad data that ends up with info for a different group then advertisers want. It isn't fake its just terrible.
