NIC Linux Performance Question

Basically, I was looking to make a small, low power consuming router/firewall. I was looking to use a mini-ITX VIA motherboard/processor and install Clark Connect on it. However, when I presented this idea in the general hardware forum, it was suggested that the board I wanted to use had Realtek chips for the onboard NIC, which would give crappy support and performance using Clark Connect.

The board uses Realtek RTL8110SC chips. I have read that it is possible to get this working with Clark Connect, but I can't seem to find anything about how this chip would perform when coupled with the relatively weak C7 processor. Does anyone know any resources where I can find this sort of thing out? Has anyone ever done something like this before? Or is this the stupidest idea ever?
