NIC Compatible with Vista 64-bit...?

My cable modem was hit by lightning and knocked out my ethernet card as well. My wife picked me up a Linksys LNE100TX from Target, but it isn't supported by Vista. I'll probably have to order one off of the internet that will work with 64-bit unless I get lucky at Best Buy. Do you guys know of any kind of cheap ones that are compatible with Vista Ultimate 64-bit? Thanks!

When you say it isn't compatible have you actually tried it? Vista has quite a few drivers built in.... it may work for you regardless. Otherwise pretty much any NIC will work, look for a Realtek or Intel nic for pretty much guaranteed compatibility

He's correct, the LNE100TX is not supported by Vista.

I recommend anything by Intel when it comes to network cards.

This PRO1000 is a good choice.

I may have a realtek stuck in a box at work. I'll check it out tomorrow. As for the linksys, Vista does not recognize it, there are no drivers on the website, and no 'fixes' on the internet for 64-bit. If all else fails, i'll get that Intel NIC. It's cheap enough!

This driver might work for you. I looked in the inf file in the package for WinXP on Linksys's website and neither the VendorID nor DeviceID match with Linksys. So after digging some more I found that the card is actually made by or a clone of a ADMtek network adapter. Try those out and see if they work for you.

Note: you have to register or view a series of offers to download from there, but it's quick and painless, or at least it used to be. I'll try to see if I can find a different (more reliable) source if you want me to.

Nice try, but no cigar. When I try to manually install that driver, i get the prompt that "the folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. if the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems."

It looks like there is no way to get around this on 64-bit Vista as the driver has to be signed with some sort of PIC something. I forgot what it stood for. I'll just order one if I can't find any in my junk box at work that will function properly.

I think where the problem lies is that LinkSys bought the technology from ADMtek to make their own version of the card. Then in 2004 Infineon bought out ADMtek. The last driver Linksys put out for this card was in 2005, so I'm thinking Infineon pulled the license from Linksys and they were no longer allowed to develop new drivers for it.

What you actually have is a ADMtek NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100

Newegg's got a Realtek based NIC for $11-12 shipped that works with Vista 64.

I'd go with an Intel Pro NIC as they work nicely with Vista 64. My previous Linksys cards did not work with Vista 64 even after trying RealTek drivers so I went out and picked up a D-Link card (wireless).

Why would Realtek drivers work on a Linksys card? I didn't think Linksys ever used a Realtek chipset.
