Nforce2 Soundstorm or Audigy?

How does the Nforce2 sound? Is it just cheap on board sound? Or, did Nvidia put some effort into it?

I have an Audigy card in my "soon to be upgraded" system. I ordered a Abit NF7-S mobo

I listen to music and play games on my PC. I do like good, clean sound.

What is a better choice the Nforce2 sound or the Audigy.

The NForce2 sound is great. I used it instead of moving my Live! to my new system. Give it a try when you get your board and see if it meets your preference. If not, slap the Audigy in. It does perform pretty well though.

don't buy the Audigy unless you're a hardcore audiophile.

this board's onboard sound is marvelous.

is that an oxymoron lol? not to put down creative, I mean I own a zs myself, but still...

Let me get this straight. You have an Audigy. You want to use onboard sound? Put the pipe down. Save some bux and get an Epox or Abit board with a SPP southbridge. Stick w/ the Audigy. You will not find better onboard sound than that provided by your Audigy. Soundstorm is phenomenal, don't get me wrong, but only when compared to all the other onboard audio solutions on the market. Creative marketspeak and driverbloat aside, the audigy is a quite capable card.

This really depends on weather you have digital speakers or not. If you dont use the audigy because the analog for soundstorm sucks. If you do keep the soundstorm it will sound better.

SPP is the northboard

I think you mean to say the MCP-T

Soundstorm is somewhere in between a 5.1 Live! and an Audigy (first series). Best place for this kind of info is here.
So unless your getting a ZS one you wouldn't see much improvement over the MCP-T.

If you already have an Audigy, stick with that and save some $$ by buying a non soundstorm equipped board. Like people said, the Soundstorm is an excellent *onboard* solution, but the Audigy still has its advantages.

Only use the Nforce 2 if you are going to use the optical out. I have the Nforce 2 and the analogue outs don't sound as good as my TBSC.

However the optical out is quite good and to me sounds as good as the digital out on the TBSC.

the SoundStorm on a NF7-S is actually about par with the Audigy series.

So it lacks some in the EAX department, but it doesn't sound bad. EAX sucks anyway, A3D and DirectSound3D are the only API's that need be used :p

I almost forgot about this, Some of the nForce2 boards have had an issue where the audio is terrible, hissing and poping, thats because the "Southbridge" chip gets hot and causes interference with the sound. What you do is put a cooler on it.
