Next Years Video Cards Will Rock!

I believe that the video cards from both ATI and nVidia will be even faster than the difference between this years and last because of the intense rivalry between ATI and nVidia.

I currently own a Radeon 9800 Pro anf if I were to upgrade, I'd buy a GeForce 6800 GT but I think between the two companies, ATI has the advantage. nVidia just released a new core with the 6800 but ATI is really using a heavily modified R300 core while nVidia is using the new NV40. When next year rolls around nVidia will just be pumping up the 6800 core like ATI has been doing for the past what...2 years or is it 3 now?

ATI basically knows what nVidia is going to do but nVidia doesn't have the slightest idea about ATI so ATI can build their new core against the NV40. I've always used nVidia products until last year when I bought the 9800P and it's a very nice card but I've got to say that I prefer nVidia a little more because of their drivers mostly. That said next year will really be a Battle Royale since honestly the cards from both companies are really at least a year ahead of their time. Most new next-gen cards are only what....50% (at most) faster than the previous generation while this years vid cards are twice as fast.

I always suspected video card developers and processor developers hold back a bit when they release a new product and this really shows it now! :D

I hope ATI isn't thinking this way otherwise we might have another Voodoo5 - GeForce ordeal (with ATI as 3dfx). I assume Nvidia is going to pull something out of their ass next gen, ATI will have to attempt to guess what that is.

ATI's biggest challenge will be meeting Nvidia's FP32 shader performance for SM3.0. as currently Nvidia's FP32 is within 20% of ATI's FP24. Nvidia will be on its 3rd generation of FP32 cards, while ATI will be just beginning.

As for this gen, the 6800GT is the best deal by far, Nvidia did a great job with the 6800 series.

Except for a 9800np that I bought about a year ago, I've had every Nvidia model since the original TNT (skipping the FX series) but honestly I hope Ati takes a slight lead next round since this pushes technology upward and prices down. Like the gentleman above I also prefer Nvidia mainly because of the unified drivers. Personally it's too soon for me to be thinking about next gen cards when this generation has just barely kicked off...not to mention the top end cards from both companies have yet to hit the market in any kind of numbers.

From some of the 'rumors' I have been hearing about the nv50 (think increases in performance equal to 5950 -> 6800 or better), ATI is going to have their hands full.

On the nVidia core naming scale(nv10, nv20 etc), hasn't every tenth number been a new core?

great. the current new cards aren't entirely out yet and people are already talking about the next-next generation.

insanity.

Yep that's about right.

NV10 = Geforce
NV20 = Geforce 3
NV30 = Geforce FX
NV40 = Geforce 6800

Maybe instead of focusing on their OpenGL drivers ATI is building their next-generation chip.

I have to agree with that 100%

yeah I want my damn X900XT 512MB card with GDDR3 and SM3.0 support running at 600Mhz/1.2Ghz foo!

i love video cards

if they had released a new core this year I would agree with you...but given that the X800 is just another rehash of the r300...I have to wonder what ATi has been doing with their time...

I kinda want 2 Geforce 7800 Ultra Platinum Extreme Not-from-concentrates running in SLI...

What software do you have that needs this dreamware to run?

Solitaire. Gotta get rid of the ghosting when you move the cards around super fast! :D

I'm sure ATI will have at least PS 3.0 and probably FP32 support finally. So far this hasn't really made a difference but this will likely change with the new game engines coming out now!

If those rumors are true (and I hope they are) then it will be interesting to see what both companies do!

The only reason I brought up the subject is because I usually upgrade every year...that is the mobo, CPU, vid card and ram and was not able to do so this year so I have to look towards next year.

Your missing the point....there doesn't have to be any software capable of running a powerful hardware config. It's just intoxicating having it so that perhaps one day we can rule the world...Mwahahaha...oh er...uh nevermind.

I hear that the cards that come out after next year's cards will rock even more! ;)

Yeah but not as much as the cards due out in 2010!!! I hear they will have 800 pipelines, the cores are clocked at 15GHz and they use DDR 5 memory! The biggest change will be the merging of ATI and nVidia which they are now called nAtia. Unfortunately since there is no longer any competition the low end card will cost $500, while the high end will cost $10,000.

wow in SLi mode :eek:

I think you've made the right move dude...I've also gave up chances of getting a new rig this year...looking at the high price of the socket 939 athlon 64s and the scarcity of the new graphic cards...
As for me, I'll just have to hold out till Christmas or next January...hopefully prices would have plunged by then ;)

I didn't really have much of a choice but I'm glad it happened that because had I upgraded this year, I would have got the A64 3400+ and missed out on all the new stuff coming out like the socket 939 and PCI-Express and DDR2. At least by next year I'll be able to get all of this and I might be able to get a dual core A64 as well but I doubt it. I think the dual core will be too expensive and it will require a new socket as well.

What's good about all that is that it will make all the other A64's drop (including the FX line) and the socket 939 mobo's too.

If I were you, I'd wait until next year for the vid card if your not getting one right now because the cards that come out in the fall are just gonna be pumped up versions of what's out now. Even though nVidia will be using the same core next year, they will have greatly improved it I imagine and we'll just have to see what ATI comes out with. I would think both companies are gonna blow the cards that are out this year away with the ones they'll introduce in 2005!

HAH!

And by then, you will be wearing a full body sensor suit and playing all games in virtual reality.

I dont want to hijack the thread, but in regard to the comment about the Dual Core AMD chips, Ruiz said that they are supposed to be the same pin-out as the single core chips and even are supposed to be recognized as 2 CPU's which will be sweet. I believe the article was on anandtech.com, just gotta fish around for it. It will probably be very expensive, but I wouldn't mind sinking my teeth into that :D

oh comon man! DDR5? pfft, old news... well be at DDR 15 by then!

nAtia... classic, lol

Or it will the new experimental CIMM or Crystal Inline Memory Module. Everything will be built on crystal technology and I'm not talking about the old hamburger joint from the 80's either. ;)

Yes and what's even more insane is that if I had the money I'd probably buy 2 just to have SLI! Oh and the other insane thing is that I killed that one guy yesterday. Hey....he had it coming...he said he would tell the leader of the purple people eaters if I didn't do what he said! I'm feeling much better now though...really!
