if i am planning on building a sff (m-itx mobo) rig in june (finish building by the end of the month at the latest), which coincides with the haswell launch, would I be able to purchase haswell cpus? or will general availability not be until a few months later?

the reason I ask is that I don't know if I should snag processors right now if they come at a good deal, or if I should wait for the newer architecture
 
Too early to tell. Plan around Ivy Bridge parts and wait it out. By the end of next month we should start to see some benchmarks and reviews of final Haswell parts. So far, unless you're interested in the iGPU part of the processor, Haswell isn't going to "blow" your mind the same way Ivy didn't blow Sandy holders minds. But if it comes out and does a healthy 5-10% like Ivy, then I see no reason not to pick it up. Just build your system out now and wait. You'll probably save maybe $30 if you find Haswell isn't up to snuff and decide it isn't worth it.
 
haswell coming out should drop ivy prices a tad bit too, so id say theres no rush to buy yuor cpu and mobo if you see a good deal. unless you plan on finishing your build before july or so, id say save that decision for last so you can make an informed decision after seeing haswell performance. if you really do plan on finishing the build by end of june, then yeah go ahead and jump on any deals you see.
 
would you consider a Core i5-3570K for $190 a good deal enough not to wait? or do you think I'd see similar prices in the near future?

Haswell is said to hit retail on 2nd June and i.e. if Intel doesn't screw up things between now and then.

thanks for the more precise date! early june is a big difference compared to late june, as I am probably moving early july and have to finish building before then due to other issues
 
Think you're overestimating how long it takes to put together a rig.
 
Depends - ordering everything is just waiting until they all arrive. A first time builder? I would allow a large chunk of the day. I know I had a heck of a time my first build.

An experienced builder? Maybe 2-3 hours to make room for troubleshooting or problems. If everything goes smooths and everything works, then yea 1-1.5 hours sounds pretty good.

But if you're waiting on funds or whatnot, if you have the money now you won't be disappointing with an IB build. But if you're waiting for funds down the road or wont have the time, then yes, consider Haswell.
 
If you plan to use applications that will show significant benefit from the 7-10% higher IPC and stronger IGP of Haswell, then wait. If this is primarily a gaming system, then SB or IB will be perfectly fine, since the primary focus should be on an add-in GPU.

And $190 for a new i5-3570K is a pretty solid deal right now. Expect release day prices of the equivalent HWL to be around $240-275.
 
pffft, ya you COULD build a rig in like 30 minutes. But where's the fun in that? IMO it's all about the fancy cable management and the case mods so you can show it off to your geek friends :)

Seriously, though - it'll take 2-4 days for the stuff to all show up once you order it. Then, if you care less about how the inside looks - 2 hours tops for a noob, then software install. If you do care and want to show it off - you could spend a few evenings easily doing nothing but cable management and lights and fancy stuff...

My recommendation: You're likely in one of two categories. 1) money really isn't an object and you just want something awesome. Or 2) money matters and you have a budget.

If you're in #2 - it's getting a bit close. I'd wait the couple of months and see what the price for the performance boost is, and wait for the price drop on the ivy bridge stuff. Depending on your budget, you'll either get the bestest you can afford, or a damn respectable budget build.

If you're in #1 category - I'd actually say screw it and buy now. Get a top of the line chip, 2-4 badarse SLI'd video cards, a whole pile of RAM, and a raid array of 1TB SSDs ;) My point being if you're in this category - you can build a PC right now that no piece of software can even come close to touching...

What price drops? Intel doesn't drop prices because a processor transitions to EOL. They charge the same amount for them until production ceases and there's no supply left, then refer their buyers to their new generation models since that is all that's available. This directly translates to no price drops at the retailer side of things, as well.

Today's Pricing:
i5-2500K $215-220
i5-3570K - $220-230
i7-2600K - $320
i7-3770K - $320-330

The SB parts have been at those prices for more than a year now. And, subsequently, IB has been out for almost a year now.
 
yeahhhh that lack of price drop seems depressing...

unfortunately i havent finished my research yet (asking questions here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1755934) and will be out of country may, so that only leaves june, otherwise i would have jumped on that $190 3570k already (by the way it is the deal at microcenter for those of you nearby who want one)

My first build took me I think two hours to do, the first twenty minutes involved me stressing out about static discharge and driving out and picking up a case of beer. After that it was mostly checking to make sure I remembered to plug in the 4/8 pin cable and making sure it ran, then a ton of cable management.

Read up on step by step build guides so you get a basic idea, keep in mind the CPU power cable needs to be plugged in and you'll be fine. Plenty of people can give you step by step help and if any troubles come up can troubleshoot it with you.

ahaha that sounds like my first time... i've built before, but was busy with school so that i've had to read up a lot on what the newest technologies are. plus the fact that all my old builds were amd rigs... not too familiar with intel before a week ago

but if you guys have comments, especially about airflow in sff cases, please let me know in my other thread :)
