Does anyone have any idea when Dell will release a new 30" monitor? I would like to buy one, but don't feel compelled to spend that kind of money on old technology. I am the hoping the 2711 will up the ante for a new 30", or at least bring down the cost of the existing ones.

Well, considering how good the U2711 I don't see much room for the U3011 unless they up the resolution. I see Dell going all 16:9, so a 30" wouldn't make much sense.

Personally I would get the U2711 if I were looking for a new monitor

The next resolution over 2560x1440 is 3840x2160 (2x2 1080p) which is a LCD size of 44" if we keep PPI at 100

I'd be happy if the U3011 is 3840x2160 then the PPI would be 147

Remember that Dell makes monitors, not panels. They will produce a new monitor when someone (LG?, Samsung?) produces an interesting new panel.

I'm very happy with 30in at 2560x1600. But panel makers are in love with 16:9, so I'm hoping for 32 inches at 2880x1620.

I doubt we'll see a new 30" with the recent release of new 27" LCDs like the u2711. Apple will be releasing their own 27" LED LCD, soon.

Old technology?
I find that LCD monitors have not improved by much in the past few years.
The get bigger, cheaper and offers more inputs like Displayport and HDMI.

LED is good for energy saving and making the monitor thinner. (Although I admit that full LED arrays with local dimming improves significantly the contrast ratio but this technology is only available on high end HDTV sets and it has some downsides like blooming).

Until OLED comes out in maybe 3-5 years, I doubt that we will see significant improvement with computer monitors.

They could at least improve the software in the current ones. The several second startup/input change/resolution change lag is annoying and it sucks that they have lots of practically useless inputs like composite etc that will never work at full res or have any semblance of image quality, just make cycling the inputs more awkward. Even the HDMI only goes up to 1920x1200.
Cut the inputs down to two DVI, one HDMI, Displayport and VGA. The OSD is also rather clunky to use and the side by side picture mode doesn't work very well.

What they need to do is improve the reliablity of IPS Panels because they suck big time and for the price it is a fucking joke really .

Dell U2410 is a prime example of having major issues on a £400 monitor. until they fix ips panel monitors im staying away from that shit and using TN panel ones.

i dont know what all the bitching about shit/poor viewing angles on tn panels because my Dell E228WFP is fucking brilliant. i literely have to view it from maybe 45-50 degrees before seeing a difference in viewing something on it.

Yea the colour and contrast aint as good as a ips panel BUT its reliable, cheaper and better Response times then IPS Panels.

Useless?
You don't have to run at native res for christ sake (what would be the point of the internal scaler? Get the HP LP 3065 and instead). I use composite för the 360 and it works great. And why would HDMI take more than 1920x1200?
No HDMI source can drive more than 1920x1200 so if anything that would be waste.

The only thing in that regard that bugs me is that you should be able to switch between active inputs.

I think kasakka might be confusing HDMI's purpose with DisplayPort's :) That being said are there any HDMI displays out there that can display higher res than 1920x1200 via HDMI? If not, then complaining about dell's not being able to is a bit unfair.

I definitely agree with the active input annoyance though. It can't be that hard to implement either!

the only reason to get 30" is for the 2560x1600. the main reason not to get one is the hard anti-glare coating they put on them. my dell is terrible... i'd never recommend a monitor like this to anyone who wants sharp, crisp & clean detail. if i could do it over i'd try the nec LCD2690WUXi

You can switch between active inputs? Either from the menu or with the dedicated button. Or did you mean switch only thru those that are actually in use? That would be a nice feature..I don't understand why it even has the scan inputs feature without this.

HDMI should be 1.3 or 1.4 spec (2560x1600 compatible) for future proofing. More and more laptops come with HDMI as the only digital output so it would be nice to use the 3008WFP with them at native res, like I can use my Macbook Pro via mini-Displayport to Displayport cable.

Yeah, thats what I meant. Was quite disappointed when I saw the 'scan for input sources' option in the OSD and found out that it was quite useless.

HDMI is for TVs, and there will be many many years before TVs will go beyond 1080p. Having HDMI as the only output on a laptop is just stupid. But ok, I see your point.

Oh, for some reason I thought a good reason to get 30" was because I wanted the biggest computer screen I could get. Seriously though, there are people that claim their TV works great for them as a monitor and it is great for them they can't tell the difference. Since I can and yes I tried it on one of the best LCDs and plasmas available today. If there was a larger computer screen available I'd get it. I have a couple of Dell 3007 models and while they are nice there is always room for improvement. I wasn't impressed with the 3008 model. I've been waiting for nearly 2 years now for a new model.

Chances are I'll get an NEC since Dell doesn't seem to have a u3011 planned. I think I got good bang for my buck with the 3007 I bought a few years back for about $1300 each.
