ok i'm upgrading my machine.

right now this is what i have

3000+ venice (place holder till fx 57 comes out)
dfi nf4 SLi MB
2x512 ocz 3700eb
sb audigy 2
x300 (place holder)

my question is should i go ahead and get 2 6800gt's now or how long before nvidia releases there next gen card or even ati. i was planning for a july release of there new cards but i really dont think anyone is going to release anything till end of the year.
 
really no telling..

if i had to guess they might show a sneak peek at e3 this year...

probably a review of them in july w/ availablility in late August.

just my guess.
 
I'd be inclined to hang on for a month or two, at least by then there should be a better idea of when cards are coming.

It'd be a real shame to sink all that cash (2 6800gts WILL cost more than a single r520 or g70) if one or both starts to hit retail in August (which is sort of what the rumours are indicating, it would be year since the last major refresh at that point, so it seems feasible).
 
Be realistic about release dates though. ATI says June. So June for reference models and the start of manufacture means no retail until July or August. June is really close so we'll see if that ever happens. Nvidia, according to the inq, has a completed core and is "sitting on it". If this is infact true you can expect almost consecutive launch dates. If it isnt true then they'll be aiming for a september launch regaurdless of the core status. They'll definitly have something by early fall.
 
well the way i'm looking at it. even if i get 2 now my GF still needs to make the transfer over to pci express so one could go to her and i could sell the other one off.

Yeah, I think it's going to be a while before the next gen cards hit retail shelves. And for the top of the line you may have to pay $400-$500. The dual GT's should carry you over until next year when the next gen cards are cheaper and the drivers for them are more mature.

I think SLI is starting to hit it's stride with the recent driver release. It's fast and stable and has a lot of game support now.
