What would you guys suggest be my next CPU? I have an ASUS P5B Deluxe, with a E4300 @ 2.8GHz and I was thinking I'd step up to something like an E6600 or so... how much of a performance increase would I be looking at? Thanks! I don't want to spend more then $350 (CDN) before tax.
 
I would stick with that processor until Penryn comes out
 
Well if you wait until July 22nd you can get the e6850 or the Q6600 for the same price as the e6600 now.
 
How much of a increase would I be seeing by upgrading to a e6850? Also, is my motherboard compatiable with Penryn? Thanks.
 
Well you would see a little increase with the e6850 at stock vs the 2.8ghz e4300 but if you were to overclock it could be pretty substantial.

Personally I would go with the Q6600.
 
OC the e4300 a little more if possible, if not just wait.
 
If you're going to spend money...

Why not get a Thermalright Ultra 120 cooler, some ram better than DDR2 667 and go for a 3.4 - 3.6ghz overclock?
 
What RAM (brand and model) would be the best upgrade I can do to seek the best performance increase? Also, would that Thermalright Ultra 120 fit in a CM Centurion? Or Must I keep the side panel off? Thanks.

Sorry for the double post, but I checked out the reviews and that seems like a great fanless cooler. However, my normal retailer NCIX.com doesn't carry the Thermalright Ultra 120 cooler... how and where do you suggest I order it? Thanks!
 
that thermalright is a great model with or without a 120 thrown on there, of course the cooling is better with. newegg has had them in stock for a while, though i'm not sure how much that will help you since i believe they only ship stateside :(
 
Quad core (ie Q6600)

Otherwise you'll see little or no gain from any of the other dual cores even after an overclock.

But personally, I would wait a year or two and see what else is on the market.
 
I don't want to start a new thread... but I had tested out 3DMark06 for the first time ever, and I got a score of 9,035 with the system in my sig, is this on par with what I should be getting? Thanks.
 
Check 3DMark orb, I believe there's a comparison function with other users with the same setup (even same overclocks if you specify).

Yes, that's on par, however, 3dmark06 has nothing to do with your cpu (well, very little) and is a reflection mostly of your graphics horsepower.

Your cpu plays very little into most games today; so if that's what your looking to upgrade (for) I would definately hold off. Your cpu is most likely not the bottleneck for 99% of the games you're playing.
