I don't know which processor to go with. I will be upgrading my GPU to a 7950 GT along with this new CPU. I just don't know which AMD to pick. Right now I'm looking at either, 3700, 3800, or 4000. I don't want to spend a lot of money this is the reason why I am looking at single core. But if there is a dual core that isn't much over $200 and you would recommend that over the three I have mentioned above then I am all ears. Thanks in advace!

Not to down the Opty 144 but I would recommend the Opty 165 since it is dual core and people everywhere are getting them up to 3.0ghz with a bit of tweaking. However, most people are getting them to 2.5 and 2.8 with minor adjustments. And its only $153 from the egg. Thats just my opinion...i picked mine up a few days ago

Agreed, it's a better choice. I would to the same if i need to upgrade but it sucks to not see any 754 dual-cores :(

The X2 3800+ and 4200+ are both under $200. Whether you can find S939 versions in stock is another story though...

Of the 3 you mention I'd go with the 3800+. The operating frequency is 2.4Ghz. I have mine running @2.74Ghz, with the stock heatsink and fan, and the hottest it's gotten is about 118F. Newegg had the 3800+ for $82 last week. This week they're $88. The 4000+ operates at the same frequency but has a 1meg L2 cache, ( the 3800+ L2 is 512 kb). You wouldn't notice the difference in day to day apps.

But, if you put the jaws of life to your wallet, and around $200 is the limit.....
There's always the OEM FX-55 for $209, or the dual core opty's. The opty 175 dual core OEM is $179, and the opty 170 dual core retail is $188.

YMMV

For single core, why not get the 3700+ instead of the 3800+? i could swear the 1 MB cache makes Windows slightly snappier, but it could be my imagination.

I think, assuming those prices that waveforme gave are still the same, the OEM FX-55 would be your best route for single core socket 939 for a tiny bit over 200 but keep in mind since its OEM your going to have to add to that the price of a heatsink, probably nothing major as you already stated your not going to overclock but for dual core wise your going to be hardpressed to find a socket 939 dualcore other than the opterons under $200, regardless I would definitely go with something with a 1mb lvl 2 cache

I say buy the OEM FX-55 (single core) if you're gaming mostly, by the time games fully utilize dual cores you're going to want to upgrade to a new socket anyway. If you have to have CPU intensive apps running in the background while playing games then get the Opty 175 OEM from newegg for 180. You'll need a cooler though, so go for the cheapo Arctic Cooling Alpine64. Since you aren't OCing it will be good enough, and it will also be good enough for OCing, one guy has the 175 at 2.6ghz 46c full load. 190$ dollars all together for that. If you get the FX-55 get that same cooler probably.

I think I will go with the FX-55. That heatsink looks great. I deff think this will be the first things I buy with my first summer paycheck!
