I'm looking to build a new system with some left over Christmas money from a non-working LCD monitor I took back to the store. I'm basically going to take the CPU/Mobo/Ram from my current computer, and build a new secondary computer around it. Then, I'm going to upgrade the CPU/Mobo/Ram on my current computer.

It's easier to just think of this as one system I'm building... Anyway, here's what I've come up with:

Motherboard: Abit 848P Motherboard 69.99
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.6"C" ghZ w/ HT 175.00
RAM: 1x Kingmax 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3500 77.00
Case: A windowed case w/400w PSU 44.00 shipped
Hard drive: Seagate 40GB 7200RPM 2MB 58.00
Video: GeForce MX440SE Dual Head 47.00

Total: 470.99
(Sorry about the lack of links to the product, newegg won't open up for me at the moment for some reason...)

I know the graphic card is bloody terrible, but I really won't be playing many games on this computer. Maybe CS once or twice a month, but nothing big. Also, I know, the RAM seems pretty terrible, but it's about half what it would cost for "good" RAM of the same amount in another brand... Would getting "good" RAM be worth the extra money?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!! :D
 
beleive me, if u wanna save yourself trouble and hedaches, just change a few things. i assume this is from newgg, so ehre are the changes i would make. u want a cheap mobo, get a springdale, this one

its another 27 bucks but it will help take out some bottlenecks on your system. cpu is fine, that one stick of ram is gonna choke your system up like crazy.

get two of these for the ram

that way you'll be running in dual channel, and since i assume you don't overclock and will be running at 1:1 it is already synced to your processors speed.

as for the case, find something that doesn't have a powersupply coming with it (unless its an antec case with antec powersupply). find some cheap case and ge tthis powersupply:

as for the video card, u say ur not gonna game much, so i guess the MX is fine. gl!

*sorry the links don't work) cna't seem to fix them, but the compnents i listed are for the PSU: a thermaltake 420watt at $49, Abit IS& (many variations, but the one i chose out was $86, it was springdale) and two sticks of geil golden dragon ram at $41 each (pc3200, 256 mb a peice)

One last question... Say I wanted to make this setup overclockable... What type of changes would need to be made to the suggestions just posted? Something like the Geil value series ram just posted, but in 3500 or something? Or will the 3200 be fine for overclocking (to a point, of course)?

Forgive my noobishness, haven't built a "real" computer since my old celeron 266 :p
 
I would stay away from giga-byte. I have had two and both were just trouble.
 
Gigabyte has been nothing but good for me. I own there KT600 mobo and 856PE mobo, and all have been good for me.

get an nf7 and a 2500+ itll save you like $100 over ur current cpu/mobo.
