Made my first Refurbished purchase from the Egg and am very glad that I did. Not only did I save me some cash, I also received all of the stuff that I would have gotten if I was to purchase a retail version of the product.

I purchased an Abit IC7 Motherboard for $75 taxed and shipped. The product came in 2 days with Fedex express saver.

My only beef is the dumb Fedex guy. I heard a knocking on the door right? As I was walking towards the door, I heard the sound of a box being dropped, I was thinking "Oh WTF!", so I opened the door. The dude asked me how I was doing, and I looked at him with a bitter, pissy ass face since the box was on the floor and the guy knew that I had heard what he did because he dropped the box 1 second before I opened my door. Then he started talking and said "Yeah, I dropped your box a little bit, just right now" then he smiled. And I was like "Uhhh...okay?" I signed the paper thinking, "That was really fucking weird". I can't really get pissed off because he straight up admitted what he had done. Haha, what a trip. But anywho, I opened the Fedex box, and as I was doing so, I was thinking "Damn this box is heavy as hell, I thought refurb crap only came as the bare motherboard"

To my surprise, I see the Abit box, nice looking box, same feel as my Powerbook packaging. I crossed my finger and opened it up. Everything looked new. Came with all of the cables and acc. and manual. Well, speaking of which, the manual and all of the paperwork was a bit off, it was for an Abit IC7-G, but who cares, at least I get to read something, lol.

So what did I learn? Newegg refurb is great, Fedex workers are weird!

That is sure great to hear! I just ordered a 9600XT refurbished off of newegg on wednesday 3/31/04. Hopefully I will be as lucky as you!
 
Hopefully you will, but think about all of the worst case scenario first and usually the exact opposite will happen, lol.

Be sure to test the video card intensively immedietely when you get it. Newegg refurb video cards have a really high defect rate and they only give you 7 days to call in a problem. Not trying to dash your hopes, but i am trying to save you a possible penny. That being said i wish ya fun and luck with the new card.

Consider yourself lucky, I bought my Asus P4PE on Newegg refurbs and got absolutely nothing, not even a rear back plate. Not only that, but to get the motherboard working I had to clear the CMOS. Still $30 isn't bad for a P4PE when I bought it at the time.

Yeah, luck plays a huge role in purchasing refurb items. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win...
 
i've been pretty lucky, my a7n266 didn't come with ANYTHING but i got my 8rda+ with full retail package :)

Luckily I had a spare backplate from my old AMD system that worked just fine.
 
So there aren't any consistency regarding Refurbs? I guess, if one is feeling lucky, then that is the perfect time to purchase a Refurb, hehe.

I think they're "refurbs" are nothing more than RMA products customers returned to egg, so whatever a customer sent back is what you get. I could be wrong though.
 
Yeah, I never really understand the real meaning of Refurbs. I know that the diff. between Refurbs and Used is that Refurb products have been sent to the manufactor and have been tried, tested, and fixed. So you might end up with somewhat of a custom product.

The Motherboard I received looks brand spanking new. The CPU socket has never been used, or it does not look like it has. Did not open the package yet, waiting for the CPU to come in.
 
The difference is that the someone is putting their name on some sort of guarentee that the item has been "fixed" and will work as good as new. Used would imply that the wear has some sort of effect on the quality/life and while refurbished is just another way of saying "used", you should hope that NewEgg fixed/tested or had someone else fix/test the product.
 
Yeah, it's really been mixed for me:

1. Enermax Redundant 400w PSU, they ship with a 350 module and no cables *at all*, and it's a heavy SOB so I've got to pay shipping back on this useless unit

2. Kingston PC2700 ECC Reg'd 512 DDR, came sealed in it's little package, apparently it's previous owner realized before opening it that their system didn't take ECC. My gain :D

3. LSI U160 64-bit SCSI card, came with nothing but works great.

So they're batting 660 in my book
 
Yeah, my first refurbished product ever was a Game Console. It was a Dreamcast, the weird thing was that my Dreamcast was the only one that is still in full working condition when compared to my friends'. Ever since that, I have been buying refurbished console because it is cheaper and it last longers.

I've been extremely lucky myself. I'm batting a 1000 with literally dozens of items purchased. Although i do tend to shy away from video cards(2), mobo's(1) and ram(0) since they are extremely sensitive pieces of hardware.

Many of the items appeared brand new including psu's and a harddrive in a sealed anti-static bag.
