how safe is it to buy a video card like a 9800 pro that has been refurbished on newegg's website..............like i have a 9700 pro right now...i am thinking off selling it and getting a refurbished 9800 pro from newegg.....is this a smart move................ :D

Not really because the performance dif between the two isn't that large. You'd be better off saving up for a 6800GT or a X800XT.

well my 9700pro is 128mb.........and the 9800pro is 256mb
i could get like $120 off ebay for the 9700pro.......add $120 and get the 9800 pro 256mb
does this seem like a bad idea........cause i dont think i will have $500+ to spend on a video card for the next year or so..........also what r the dangers of buying refurbished card........

At least save for 6800nu it's about 290-300

And it's so damn good and fast for it's low price (you can overclock it to GT)

It's really not a worthwhile upgrade. Even with the extra VRAM. Your 9700 pro can probably reach 9800 clock speeds. Just save the money. Even the low end of the next gen cards will be a better upgrade than 9700pro to 9800pro.

k guys u got me.............my 9700 pro stays........glad i asked before putting it up for sale on ebay.......... :D :D :D

Well, I got a 128mb 9800 Pro coming today from newegg for $167. It will be replacing my 9700np, which a buddy is buying for $100. So, as long as the refurb works, I'll be happy...as this will give me a little more performance for Doom3 and will allow me to postpone getting a 6800GT until a 939 PCI-Express board comes out at the end of the year. If I'm really lucky, not only will it work, but it will have an R360 core. I can easily justify $67 to the wife, as opposed to $300 extra for a GT.

Nah, as others have stated the performance increase from 9700->9800 ain't worth it. A 6800GT would be a more noticable improvement, and therefore more worthwhile investment.

Good idea keeping the 9700 Pro, to answer your question tho. My 9700 Pro was ordered on newegg refurbished. To be safe about it I called newegg's support line and talked to a guy who said alot of the 9700 Pro's were sent back because people were too dumb to plug the power cable in. So I got me a cheap card that works great a year and a half later with my Zalman Heatpipe and OC'd every bit I could.
