I thought about making the jump to 2 raptors in raid 0. If one of the drives fails you loose your data so I was wondering how reliable running this configuration is. That said, I hear alot about backing up your data but I don't really understand how this is done. I googled and came up with programs...so do you have to buy a program? Finally, 2 raptors are pretty expensive so would there be a performance benefit with buying one to use right off the bat, then holding off until later to pick up another one? Any information is appreciated...thanks in advance.
 
What is the primary function of your machine?

For backups I use windows backup. Free and works great.
 
It would probably be for some schoolwork and gaming. Forgot to mention it would be going on a Q-Pack. I dont keep anything like Microsoft Money or any tax stuff on there so I'm debating if I should even worry..
 
Not worth it imho. There are a fairly narrow range of applications that get a consistant performance boost from a level 0 array. Uncompressed video editing is probably the best example. I'd wait out the new raptor and go with a single drive if I were looking to move to a faster disk.

im not going to comment on RAID, as there is a million treads on it, and the subject generally turns to flam wars.

But on the topic of backing up....A backup is simply a copy of the data. A back up can be as simple as having a second HDD in your computer and manually copying for valuable non-replaceable data form you main drive to your second drive. Such as pictures, music, movies, work stuff, anything that doesn’t just get reinstalled with a CD or along with the install of your OS of choice.

There are many many, programs that can be used to backup data. They have a lot of pros over just copying your data over such as, data compression to save space on your backups. Software also provides forms of management so you know what has been backed up, the dates it has been backed up, and using a differential backup it will only backup files that have been added, or modified since the last backup. Saving lots of space. You don’t need 3 copies of the same song on you backup do you?

Me personally? I use the built in backup program in windows. (Start>all Programs>Accessories>System tools>Backup) It provides enough features to do a little more than just a copy past to another drive backup. It dose differential backups for me, has a building scheduler, stores all the backup data in one file. It has a very low compression, IMO it shouldn’t even bother, on my average 123gb backup, the size difference between copy/paste and windows backup is only 1.5gb, lol, why bother? But it dose try to compress it.

My most important data, such as my bank info files, and my pictures of my daughter are all stored in 4 places. The main hard drive where it is accessed every day almost, on my backup hard drive witch is only powered up once a week, on a DL DVD (I burn a new one every 2 month or so.. and I keep a copy of it on my home folder at work, but that just so I can have the picture on hand at work as well. This is funny because my home folder is backed up daily to SDLT tapes by our backup server.
 
Awesome, thanks for all the info it was just what I needed. Is this Windows Backup only available on XP because I'm on ME :rolleyes: right now and I don't see that option...
 
I believe its been available since win 95 or possibly earlier. You may need to install it through add/remove programs > windows components. ME is the only windows I have no experience with but it is available in every other version so my assumption is that its there also.

Your best upgrade option right now is 1 Raptor and Windows Xp.......Lose the Windows ME quick :)
 
id say nay on the raptors in raid....i had it...i used it for quite awhile....then broke the array and went with single drives...and u guessed it, load times were a bit faster, subjectively.

everything seemed a bit quicker etc. of course benchin the drive showed there was a performance loss, but loading maps, playing games etc, i never saw a decrease, on the contrary it seemed a bit faster...

i had, and still have it, what i believe to be a decent raid card, from Pacific Digital, the Talon that was supposedly designed to work with the raptors..but was constantly having irq conflicts with my soundcard and whatnot...i ended up takin the card out and seperating the data on my 2 raptors...workin fine now
