im getting the logitech z-5500's and ive never used a set of 5.1's speakers. i have an old sblive 5.1... anyways, my question, do i need to upgrade my sound card to take adavantage of the new technologies in dvds/games for my 5.1s (surround sound and such) or just stick with the old sblive 5.1? i mainly listen to music and watch dvds... once in a while i play games.
 
Honestly, You probably won't notice a difference.

Even though technically there is a HUGE difference between the two cards, if you jsut an average listener then the SB Live will be fine.
 
considering you have 4 fairly decent if not very power personal computers

... what would be the problem with getting a more expensive sound card when you've already spent around $300 for a video card on 1 of those, I don't know what your current money situation is but telling from the sig it looks like it can't be too bad. Upgrade to an Audigy ZS for gaming or a M-audio Revolution, Audiotrak ProdigyLT.
 
You don't NEED to upgrade, but you owe it to yourself to match your new speakers with a better soundcard IMO. The Audigy 2 Value is a very decent card for movies and gaming. Patch the new Audigy 4 drivers for Audigy 2 compatability and install them.
