newbie Question

I found a frayed wire on the IDE strap to my HDD could this short out a MOBO?
Power is flowing through the mobo to the mouse but can't get CPU to start
 
Post some more detailed info, so the folks can help you.
Mobo model, PSU model and the like.

I'd replace that strap for starters, but I think your problem may involve more then that.

did it ever work or is this a new build? (one thing that came to mind is that your CMOS reset jumper may be in the wrong position or the switch on the back of your power supply may be off OR since you are a newbie, your comptuer may not be plugged in)
 
Any how here is some more info.

This is a old computer that I was putting some "new" old parts into namely Hard drive

This system worked until i shut it down and won't start again

I stripped it down to Cpu and MOBO only and
Powerswitch.

Plugged into power verified.
Power flowing through mobo ( I see led from optical mouse light up)


When i hit power fans don't spin up

MOBO - is Abit BE 6 II

CPU - PIII 550

(after It would not start again I noticed that one of the IDE cables had a hole in it and some frayed wires in it.)

oh and i think the same problem that i am having now happened to the system that i pulled the hard drive out of.
 
ah, the old demon harddrive issue. well, try the mobo with a different power supply and/or the power supply with a different mobo. Also, make sure your CPU is seated fully.
 
The story goes ... like this
Helping a buddy out with his. ( MOBO got fried maybe same issue as mine now)

Testing out on mine ... working sporadically... was checking as to why it was missbehaving now mine don't work either.

Power supply was okay I have tried 4 different ones that are/were all reliable.

CPU seated like a j lo's ass in a tight pair of jeans.

Fans are not spinning up ... Feels like the power switch signal is not making it throught the MOBO to the start the power supply, but I know the switch is good I have 2 that were working just fine the day my MOBO would not start and I have tested with both.
 
Well, it sounds like your mobo is fried to me. :(

If you tried to post without any HDD's, floppies, CD-ROMs, or any extra PCI cards that you don't need, and you know the powersupply is good, I don't know what else it could be. Possibly the CPU. Do you have access to a mobo that is compatible? (That is an older machine)

So, did you put his powersupply in your machine and now yours doesn't work? Because if that's the case I wouldn't stick that powersupply in any other computers.
