Newbie Question - PC Works But Doesn't Beep

I am inexperienced building PCs but had a go recently. I actually built two and both have the same problem. The PCs work fine but they don't beep when at POST. How does the PC beep? What has to be connected? With both cases, I have an HD Audio and AC97 cable. I plug the HD Audio into the front panel audio header on the motherboard. Is this correct?

Usually there is a speaker that gets connected to the speaker port on the MB.

There's usually a small speaker in the case with red and black wires, that will connect to a speaker header on the motherboard (along with the rest of the power, reset, hdd light, etc headers)
 
Many cases no longer come with the speaker. My Antec 900 cases and my Antec 300 do not have speakers.

Some Motherboards have a little speaker built in. Most do not.

You could always add one if you really want the comforting beep at post:

Or pull one from an old case and use that. Hell, I probably have an old case laying around somewhere with a speaker in it.......

Perhaps these cases don't have a speaker then. It's no issue, I will go without. The motherboard has an LED display telling me error codes anyway. I will have another look at the cases, perhaps I missed it.

What is the HD Audio/AC97 cable for then? Something to do with sound obviously lol.

That connects to the motherboard for front panel (front of the case) audio connectors, such as headphones and microphone.

Used if you are using onboard sound.

Or, I believe you can connect that to your sound card if your soundcard has the correct connectors (HD Audio/AC97).

You only connect one of them (Either HD Audio or AC97). The one you connect depends on your motherboard's onboard sound.

The HD Audio plug can go inside my sound card? Is there a port on the soundcard for this? I have a Creative X-fi ExtremeMusic
