HOW? lol, is it when you have windows wipe it clean?
need to know as im swapping MBs for first time and im suppose to format HD so as to have no probs with the drivers or something
thanks for the help

Yeah, if you have Windows XP, when you put the CD in and reboot to reinstall it, it should give you the option to delete your current partition and format with the "NTFS File System" or the "FAT32 file system". You'll want to format it with the NTFS file system.

And yes, formatting is where it deletes everything from the hard drive so you start from scratch.

cool so before i remove my old MB reformat untill its all unninstalled from my HD then shut it down and Swap MBs then just reinstall windows or can i just reformat using the CD after the switch? last question will i have to get another Pin number for XP since ill be adding new MB ?

You can just leave it as it is before you change motherboards, then install the new one, then format and reinstall XP. And my guess is that you might need a new serial number for Windows XP after you change your motherboard, however I'm not sure...

First, RM_Bulldog, you know that you DO NOT have to format your hard drive just because you are installing a new motherboard. I couldn't tell from your post whether you thought you had to or not. If you DO want to format, I agree with RS3RS, just swap out your motherboard, connect everything, and then place the bootable WinXP CD, and choose to complete format to NTFS.

As for the activation code, I think that depends on how long it has been since you last installed that copy of WinXP. If I remember correctly, Microsoft allows you to install XP again with the same key, if it is after several months, because they anticipate hardware changes, so they must allow that to be possible. I am not 100% sure about this, but I do remember someone doing something like that. Good Luck

For the activation code, if it does not let you activate it. Then it will tell you what number to call and they will give you an activation code. PITA if you ask me! I have had to go through with this, it is easier to get a cracked copy than to try and be legit and pay for MS software. (Not that I advocate stealing, its just MS makes it attractive to end users).
