i have a mother board that says the agp supports 2x/4x/pro.

now if the video card says its 4x/8x would it work on my mother board?

but better would have better graphics as well as preform better then a pci video card right?

yes the agp slot have always been better than a pci slot no matter how much the transfer rate is
in other words agp 4x > pci slot
:)

ANY AGP card will work better than a PCI varient... even if it was AGP 1x...

QFT.

Of course, if you are talking about PCI-e and not PCI, then it's a different story. Current PCI-e cards only transfer data at about the same rate as AGP 4x (incidently, so do AGP 8x cards). The bandwidth potential of both AGP 8X and PCI-e is currently not nearly being used. The only real advantages of PCI-e over AGP is that it gives the buyer access to more purchasing options (e.g., 7800 series is PCI-e only) and SLI.

The card will work just fine. I had the same concerns installing an x800xt pe (8x agp, according to the box) on a mb that supports 2x, 4x agp. There were no problems, however, and you won't notice a performance difference (even though it will run at 4x agp, and 4x agp is slower than 8x, or pro). I can run all the latest games at great settings and my 3dmarks are right in line with similiar systems - I am not suffering from having to run at 4x. 1066 mb/s is more than enough. Hope this helps.

Which makes no difference whatsoever, seeing as the best video cards available now are just starting to use more bandwidth than AGP 4x allows.

thanx for the great responces, you all have put my mind at ease somewhat...now the question is what card to get

Sapphiretech's Ultimate 9800pro 128mb
vs
Ati's normal 9800pro 128mb
vs
Xfx's Geforce 6600GT 128mb

6600 GT should outperform the 9800 series in any instance, even without the decent OC you will probably get - here is one example:
