i'm putting together a budget gaming upgrade and need to add an sli-certified power supply to eventually run two 7600 cards. otherwise, a couple of hard drives and a couple of dvd drives.

the two psu options i'm debating based on my limited reading:

-XCLIO GoodPower 500W, $50
-Antec TRUEPOWERII 550W, $90

the question is simple: considering my needs, what exactly do i get for my $40 with antec? (or, is that xclio the cheapest sli-certified psu around for a reason?)

many thanks.

Not enough to justify a 80% increase in price!

The "XCLIO GoodPower 500W, $50" will be fine. ;)

sli certified is a sticker slapped on to steal your hard earned money, and as far as two 7600 goes, the real sli preformance gains come from high end cards, two budjet cards will not have the same dramatic increase in pref. I'd reccomend a single card x1800xt or 7900gt
If you read the FAQ youd know that the sli certification is a marketing ploy that doesnt take into account any of your other hardware.
please anyone correct me if im wrong

IMO, they would certify an empty shoe box if the money was right! :p

thanks for the help.

so the more i read, the more i realize that the 128-bit graphics card my not hack it on my 24" monitor, meaning that an sli setup with two 7600gt cards will hit a bottleneck at hi res.

so, say the configuration (no longer budget) was for an eventual sli arrangement of 7900gt cards. in that case, is the $50 XClio PSU still going to cut it? here was the comparison:

-XCLIO GoodPower 500W, $50
-Antec TRUEPOWERII 550W, $90

really, what does one get from antec for that $40? in addition to 50 watts, there must be something...no?

For highend SLI, you are looking at far more expensive PSU's!

PC P&C 610W: $159
Corsair 620W: $154
OCZ GXS 600W: $100

You mentioned a no name brand power supply and compared to Antec. I am of the school that you don't skimp on the power supply, especially with high end parts. Go with the Antec...I suspect you will have little or no problems with it.

Remember, cheap power supplies can give your system an uneven flow of power, something you won't even know about...until your system becomes unstable or parts start burning out. $40 now is well worth it.

The "no name" brand power supply is actually a brand that's been around for quite some time and quite frankly has the same internals as the Antec (Fuhjyyu cap equipped Channel Well, unfortunately.)

So, if the Xclio is going to give the system an uneven flow of power causing the system to become unstable or causing parts to burn out... so would the Antec. ;)

The last XCilo's I tested had much better air flow than the Antec's, so hopefuly this won't be a problem.

The "cap problem" has not been reported for XCilo's, AFAIK.

Thanks for the info....I try to avoid opening my mouth when I am wrong, but I obviously failed this time.

So speaking of my being wrong, is my faith in Antec misplaced? I am aware they don't make the PS themselves, but their CS is great and I have never had a problem with Antec. They have always been high-quality and stable for me (and some friends), at least compared to Allied, Turbolink, and many other PS's that came with cases.

Well certainly if you're comparing Antec to companies like Allied, Turbolink, etc. that have a complete lack of CS or any hint of quality... then Antec is awesome! :D
