Newbie needs some advice

When I run folding@home-gpu, I get the error "At present your GPU is not supported or you need a current driver." What is the fix for this?

FYI. ATI 5xxx series gpus require the -forcegpu ati_r700 switch to run properly.

Per Dookey.

I think all you have to do is copy this flag into the config menu of the GPU client if it gets that far. Otherwise I think you need to create a shortcut to start the client. right click on the shortcut and go to properties. Add that flag onto the end of the contents of the target box. Be sure to include a space between the end of the filename and the dash.

@ Kendrak, He has a ATI 5850, No cuda, sir.

To add this flag, go into the configuration window for the client, click on the Advanced tab, and put it in the box at the bottom titled "Additional Client Parameters".

Ya, I just wasn't sure by his post if the client was even starting.

So I put that in my Start in box in properties and it now reads:
C:\Users\Sean\AppData\Roaming\Folding@home-gpu\ -forcegpu ati_r700

But I'm still getting the same error. Did I do something wrong?

Yes, you did something wrong. The flag should be included in the Target box, not the Start box. The Target line should look like this:

C:\Users\*******\AppData\Roaming\Folding@home-gpu\Folding@home.exe -forcegpu ati_r700

Not to go off subject, i messaged you about the processor AARP.

Kendrak currently has 1st dibs on it, but I won't be posting it until at least the weekend. If something changes between then and now you'll have dibs.

Hmm, it seems I don't have a target line.

Get rid of the startup shortcut that the install gives you. Create a shortcut directly from the .exe in the folding@home directory. Then you put the flag I gave you earlier in the thread in the target box.

You will also need to give the shortcut created admin rights.

Muchas Gracias.

Ok, Everything is working perfectly. Under the advanced tab should I check "Do NOT lock cores to specific CPU"? Also, is there a way to view my combined PPD with both the processor and GPU?

Yep, I recommend you check the box you mentioned. FAHMON is a great program to see your PPD. Google the download and then add the gpu client directory and then the VM directory. Be sure to check the box for the VM directory that it is running a virtual client.

There's a sticky above that tells you how to setup FAHMON. Come back here if you need help.

Directory for VM is \\fold-xxxx\C\etc\folding\1\

xxxx=what the VM selects. You will see it in the window.

Aha. Yep, I already have FAHMON for my CPU but didn't know that I could add my GPU. What would the path look like?

I'm running windows 7 64 bit and my path is:

c:\program files (x86)\folding@home\folding@home-gpu\

K, I think everything is set up correctly now. What should my PPD be averaging?

I didn't notice if you posted cpu ghz, but I'm thinking you should be getting at least 6-7k between the cpu and gpu.

A NV gpu would be faster. My 5870 at stock gets about 4.2k and my cpu gets around 4.5k.

Since I'm running xfire I can't use my second 5870.

Hmm. Something isn't working. I'm only getting a dismal 756.00* PPD on my CPU and 1435 PPD on my GPU. I looked at my vm and I see this message "# hrtimer: interrupt too slow, forcing clock min delta to 8619969 ns" Could that be why my CPU PPD is so low? Also, in taskmanager my CPU is running at full usage. What could be my problem?

Are the clients set to 100% usage? Is the VM notfred? And maybe the GPU isn't clocking up to 3D clocks...?

post log file please

There's nothing wrong with that log file. It looks word for word like the one in mine, and I'm getting 8500ppd at the moment. Check that CPU and GPU are at 100%, check core affinities, priorities, etc. And maybe restart the VM. I'm not sure what it will do, but it definitely won't hurt.

I didn't see anything either (I'm not a log file expert though)

This makes me thing something is wrong outside the VM.

As the ATI GPU client needs a good percentage of one core to run at full speed .....
Try dropping it down the SMP client down to -smp 7 to free a core up for the ATI GPU client.
Then use something like WinAFC to lock the VM to the first 7 CPU cores and the GPU to the 8th CPU core.
That way the SMP client and the GPU client are not fighting over one core and both may run faster.

Luck ........... :D

If he has the VM set to idle, could he not just set the GPU to slightly higher in the client to avoid all the extra steps?

They won't. Because of the affinities that you're advised to set in the guides, the GPU gets all the cycles it needs and the SMP takes everything else. Manually assigning the GPU client a whole core means the SMP client loses out on about 12% of a core, which as far as I'm concerned would make the SMP client worse off than if it had all 8 cores and had to give way to the GPU client.

Now in the VM console I am getting the line " attempt to access beyond end of device
hda1: rw=1, want =2097088, limit=2088387" What does that mean?

If this is a NotFred installation your running under VM, it's nothing major to worry about. I get the same on both of mine as well as others. I think it can be cleared with a VM reboot, but you'll continue to see it after a while.

How would I do that?
Manually, if you want. Bring up the task manager, right-click the Fahcore_11.exe process, and select "Set Priority". Normally people set it to "High", so that it takes precedence over normal system processes. Since it only uses one core, for dual-core systems and up it's no biggie, the system will function perfectly fine without that core. However, for single-core machines, I expect the performance hit to be more major. However, it means that the GPU client now takes precedence over everything else, maximizing ppd.

It's nothing to worry about. NotFred knows of the issue, and presumably he's working on a fix, but it doesn't affect performance in any way.

AARP - Did you ever get this Ati 5850 folding solid? If so, what kind of PPD are you able to get out of it?

The 5xxx series doesn't do well. Running stock clocks on my 5870 I average around 4.3k ppd.

That's better than any other ATI card.

Still, It's like having a Corvette and not being allowed to take it out of first gear.

Ahhh, okay. I was hoping that maybe the 5xxx series performed a bit better than previous models. Sure would be nice if ATi and Stanford would get together on that and provide a better client suited for the red team. I guess that CUDA has a huge advantage for crunching numbers, but there's a lot of unused potential out there with the ATi cards that could be put to good use (we *know* the horsepower is there).

It's not just the client, it's the scoring model aswell, it doesn't bode well for ATI
Now a more efficent client would boost the scores, and that would take a while, but it is kinda sucky that Stanford hasn't atleast adjusted the scoring a bit to help ATI
