I have a Dell Dimension 8100. It shipped with windows ME, and I upgraded it to WinXp (upgrade disc shipped by Dell). Now, 7 years later, I need to reformat the hard drive (its time) and reinstall XP. I have a Windows ME "Reinstallation CD". This is a CD with a Dell logo on it. I also have the Windows XP upgrade cd, which has the Windows hologram on it. I have read that restore cd's can't be used as qualifying product, but is that true for reinstall cds? I also have a windows 2000pro install cd, if that would be of any use. Can anyone give me (or point me to) a step-by-step run down on how to go about this?

Try to just boot from the XP upgrade disc and do a clean install. If that doesn't work then just put ME back on then upgrade to XP again like you did back then. The ME restore disc is going to put the system back to factory defaults and if the XP upgrade worked then there should be no reason it doesn't work now.

You could also try to find someone that has an OEM XP disc and just install from that and put the COE code in that came with your XP disc.

from the way you state things the ME cd is the reinstall disk and the XP cd is the upgrade disk? if thats the case i think you need to run the ME cd first then when its done being installed use the xp disk to upgrade it to windows xp

The win ME disk will reset the pc back to factory. It looks like you will have to do the reinstall with ME then once that is installed, then run the xp upgrade disk. It should work and activate without any issues.

I love when we all post at the same time. LOL

The windows me cd is only a reinstall cd. Will it do a clean install on a new harddrive?

it should, but it may be a oem disk and require the old install to be on the hard drive soon so it can just install over it. if thats the case you may have to come up with a new xp install disk =(
