Lets pop my posting cherry with a question, So today I set up my computer, my girlfriends computer and my laptop to fold.. Took a while but the forums here had answers to just about every question I had. (for that matter theres quite a bit of good info on these forums)

However, I ran into a small problem, my girlfriends PC finished folding its first Work Unit, and is unable to send it. This is what the log states:

[23:39:29] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[23:39:29] + Could not connect to Work Server (results)
[23:39:29] (171.64.122.76:8080)
[23:39:29] + Retrying using alternative port
[23:39:29] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[23:39:29] (Got status 503)
[23:39:29] + Could not connect to Work Server (results)
[23:39:29] (171.64.122.76:80)
[23:39:29] Could not transmit unit 01 to Collection server; keeping in queue.

I figured it was a fluke and would auto correct but this error started about 9 hours ago, and just keeps getting put back in the queue.
I type that Ip in my browser and nothing comes up (I think i read that it is supposed to say "OK"?)...
Any suggestions for a little noob?

It happens from time to time, it's either Stanford's servers are down, try pinging the address in question, or your client is stuck. Shut down and reboot then restart the client, sometimes restarting the client a few times helps

I have this problem with GPU work units. I might have completed work in que to be sent back for days. Then all the sudden its gone and the credit comes. It can be madding at times.

SMP does it sometimes but not very often. I think the nix folders had a down or slow server the other day.

Some times,, well at least twice a week I think Stanford is lying to us or at best jerking a chain or two. But in the end the work goes and new work comes.

I pinged that server and got a good response so it looks like the server is ok. BillR is probably right and it's just a stuck client. Here's a link to the Stanford server status page. Might come in handy for you from time to time.

Thanks for the warm welcome, So i tried what was suggest: Rebooted the PC, Turn the program on an off a few times, rebooted the PC again, no avail still fails.

I then tried pinging the ip address 171.64.122.76 ping comes back rather quickly, think to my self hmmmm then i do a tracert on the address and it times out at the 14th hop. Strange.

Yeah I wouldnt worry about that unit not sending. That does happen once in a while and usually it will credit you for the WU at some point. Is the computer turning in other units ok?

have you also checked make sure if you have any firewalls that its not blocking the folding client from connecting?

dumb question but figure it should be asked since no one else has..

This and anti virus should not be over looked. Good call. What brand of firewall/anti virus do you have?

 
First of all, welcome to the [H]ardest team in the world.

Now, serious business... It looks like you can connect to the server fine but timeout when trying to upload a big unit. There is not a lot you can do since it's usually a problem on the ISP or backbone end as you may have noticed with the tracert. status 503 definition :

Your Web server is currently unable to handle the HTTP request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay. Some servers in this state may also simply refuse the socket connection, in which case a different error may be generated because the socket creation timed out.
