I'm new to audio systems, and as such this is my first audio build.

This is what I am planning to get:

Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 bookshelf speakers

or

Wharfedale Diamond 9.5 Black

As for the speakers, they are what are currently available to me, that are from decent brands.

As for the amp, I choose this one, do you guys know of it? Good, bad?

TRENDS TA 10.1 WONDER MICRO AMP

This is where I am a little confused. Do you plug the speakers into a amp? then plug the amp into the receiver?

But cant you just plug the speakers straight into the receiver?

As for the receiver, I don't know what to look for, it would be great if you guys could point me in the right direction.

Cabling: the quality of the wires/cables can impact on the quality of the sound produced, correct? What should I be looking for in terms of quality audio cables?

I'll be connecting this to my computer via SPIF/coxial output from the motherboard.

I know my own research was pretty minimal before coming here, but if you could bare with me:)

Not sure about the speakers, but the amp should be pretty good. To put it simply, you don't need both an amp and a receiver because receivers have amps built-in, so choose one or the other. Later on you can add external amps for speakers, but I'm guessing at this stage you don't need the complexity and cost for only a marginal improvement in sound quality. I think it would help if you could specify a budget, that way people could give you specific recommendations for the amount of money you want to spend :)
