newbie comp building questions

I will start putting together my new comp tommorrow( specs in sig) but i have a few questions and things i have to clarify.

1:} I have ordered a coolermaster aero4 heatsink to replace the stock intel hs/fan and i finished removing the T.I.M. that comes w/ it. I will be replacing that w/ arctic silver 5, how am i supposed to apply the paste? Do i apply it on the processor and spread it evenly and then install the heatsink?

2:} should i take any special precautions while mounting the mobo?

3:} i have accidently dropped the video card while handling it in my garage and it hit the floor, the card was dropped 5 inches from the floor. So i assume that card would still work, i didnt see any signs of damage on it, am i right?
 
1.) Yes. Apply a small amount onto the CPU and try to spread it around pretty evenly. You do not have to go all the way to the very edge of the heat spreader as the compound will spread when the HSF is mounted. After you mount the HSF take it off and look at your CPU. If there is a bunch of excess squishing over the edges then grab a Q-tip and wipe that crap off. Be careful not to get the AS5 all over your socket and mobo, etc. After its cleaned up or you notice that it looks pretty good then stick it back on and you should be golden. If you didn't put enough on then try again. You should only need a very small amount, about half the size of a pea.

2.) Make sure you have all the standoffs installed in the right spots. Be carefull not to scrape the bottom of your mobo all over the brass standoffs in the tray. Some people like to install the CPU before the mobo is installed into the case.

3.) Only one way to find out. If you did break it I doubt it will start a fire or anything so I wouldn't worry about it, it's either dead or its not.

As mentioned, A SMALL AMOUNT OF THERMAL PASTE IS A MUST. when I built my first computer I poored a whole tube of artec 5 on the p4 2.5, and it killed my cpu

Do you mean the patch of thermal paste that comes on the retail HSF isn't near the die of your CPU when you allign them?

If the thermal paste doesn't make contact with the die on the CPU, you'll more than likely have overheating problems.
 
thats what I ment :-o should I go out and get some other compound to put on it?

the paste is over the die but the rubber thingys keep them a good milimeter or 2 away from each other
 
most important, if it burns out, since it is new and retail and I did follow instructions, will AMD replace it?
 
Can you take a picture of this? I'd like to see exactly what you're talking about here. I just have a hard time believing that a stock HSF does not install correctly.
 
actually no.. I installed the motherboard, now have no idea how to get it out..

let me try to explain myself the best I can... clarity is nor my forte.. nore is spelling :(

I pealed the tape off the thermal compound.. and installed the heatsink over the cpu. it actually looks exactly like the demo picture.. but the compound doesn;t touch the cpu.. but then it didn't in the picture anyways.. so I'm wondering if the compound has to make a bridge between the heatsink and the CPU or if my CPU and HSF are good to go.. the reason I am wondering this is because everytime I read about this it seems like the compound should be activly connecting the two.. and I find it hard to believe that it will be usefull in conducting heat if all three are not touching :-|

if I am still not clear then I will try to get a picture when my video card comes..
 
Dude, the heatsink compound is only there to interface between the almost microscopic scratches on the cpu and the heatsink. The cpu and heatsink should be firmly snugged against each other. If there are some rubber thingies preventing the two from touching, you need to take the rubbers off! :D
 
Don't take off those rubber circles on the corners of the processor. Those are to prevent the HSF from damaging the processor.

Here's what I think is happening:

I think you're placing the HSF on the processor, but not attaching the clips on the HSF to the socket. This would give the appearance that the compound isn't making contact with the die.

After you latch the HSF to the socket, the compound should come extremely close to the die. Once you run your computer for the first time for 30 min or so, the heat will cause the compound to melt and settle down covering the die and all should be good after that.

Of course you have to realize that you're not going to be doing much overclocking with the retail HSF :)

nothing, but that melting thing makes sence.. so I think I'll give it a try,, wish me luck, or I'm out of a CPU :D oh :(
