Hello, I'm just about ready to purchase a new computer piece by piece and then get on some mods.

When you do your mods and are working with the computer hardware, do you use anything special to prevent electric static?

I know where I live, the humidity can get low, and sometimes static shocks are really bad.

I have seen cheap anti static wrist bands. (my workbench does'nt have a ground near it... so that's kinda out of the picture)

But i was wondering if anyone uses gloves (eaither high quality gloves, or just cheap latex)... would they prevent static shocks?

I'm not commenting on my own experiences, but from what I heard. People often touch something metallic every so often to ground yourself. Or you can make your own grounder by attaching a wire arond your wrist and running it to the ground. Anti-static spray is something I have seen. Also, try to not do your modding on carpet. Don't wear cotton gloves.

Anything that is metallic, and touching you and the ground would work. You don't really need to buy anything, if you have any wires laying around, just wrap it around the ol' wrist and bring it to the ground. Simple.

Yea, the closest thing to where i will be setting this thing up as a faucet, but that's like 15ft away, and I don't have any wire that long ~_~.

I guess its a glove where you clip a little wire to a button on it, and it keeps the hand grounded.
But i have never seen or used one, so who knows.
 
I, like most just ground myself to the case and have never had any problems.

Just touch the case before shoving your hands inside.
 
Yea, up untill now that's what ive done. I have to put my cat in the basement (she likes to rub up against me when im doing something out of the ordinary), and work with my socks off on a wood floor, and I just keep touching the case/PSU. And I try and avoid any computer work during the winter (30% humidity in the NorthEast). But up untill now I have done just small changes.
 
I might be a good idea to invest in an antistaic mat that you can use on your work area and ground yourself to the mat using a wriststrap. That's what I use at work and I love it. It's convenient and gives you a dedicated work space. You can find them at Cyberguys
 
I find myself automatically touching the case frequently when working on stuff and I have yet to zap anything
 
I, like others, touch the case before doing anything. Generally, I find that I'm resting my arms on the case frame itself.

I would get one of these. I hated them untill I zapped a mobo. Even if you make it a point to touch the case al the time. If you forget once ZZZZZZZZZZzAP! :(
 
Funny story I just remembered. Back when I had a Apple IIc, I ran across my carpet floor and touched the keyboard, and BAM! the computer just shut off, and wouldn't turn on, so tell that to the naysayers that say static cannot fry components.

If you are talking about mods like drilling holes in your case and whatnot it is a good idea to take all of the electronics out. It's easier for metal shavings to do damage than it is for static electricity to do damage.
 
get a small wire wrap it around your wrist then wrap the other end around your psu or any part of your case and you'll be grounded until you release that wire...
 
Thanks for the info guys! Yea, any mods I do would be before I install things. But putting it together, and then doing some wire managment with the parts in it is where I was most concerned.
