I purchased a new lenovo laptop recently and I plan to upgrade the HDD from the 5400 to a momentus XT. Only problem I'm running into is how exactly to move the recovery partition from the stock drive to the new drive. After that, how exactly would I go about loading this onto the new drive?

Would it be easier to attempt to make an image of the entire drive right now and then throw it over on the new HDD? I've been working in networking for a while but have honestly never had to do something like this.

Any help would be appreciated!
 
why do you want the recovery partition? do you really need to reload all the bloatware?

first thing i do whenever i get a new laptop is wipe the drive and start fresh. use windows backup service or some other backup method for disaster recovery.

if you really 'must' have that bloatware though acronis trueimage will do what you want.

No I certainly don't. However I dont have any other means of obtaining the operating system atm.
 
I would use one of the many free disk copy software out there to copy one drive to another via USB or preferably via SATA in a desktop system.

My preferred method is to make a image of the brand new laptop drive, prior to first boot, and then restore the image to the new drive. That lets you keep the original drive untouched, and also gives you a proven back of the actual new laptop the way it was when u got it. With most companies not adding windows discs anymore, this is what i do.

Lenovo's ship with their own backup utility buried on the start menu somewhere. You run it, and it prompts you for a few DVD's then you can re-install the OS if the drive dies.

EDIT: I had to log on to my workstation at work to find the name. It's called Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools and the option under there is "Factory Recovery Disks"

If you don't see it on your machine, you can either find it on lenovos site or install lenovo system update which will give you the option directly to download it.
