Newb Question: DOA or redo thermals

So after taking the advice of various persons on this site I went forth and built a decent water cooling system.

I have two HIS 280x cards with the heatkiller waterblocks installed on them

First time I loaded up the PC, windows 8.1 would crash 80-90 seconds in, constantly.

Me and sdotbrucato fumbled with it and when we unplug the top card, it loads windows just fine.

There was a slew of issues when we changed from sapphires to HIS cards, and we kinda scattershotted solutions to get the pc running.

But my question to you, given that one working card causes windows and games to run just fine, is the second card DOA or is a part of it overheating and I need to redo the thermal pads?

Any quick observation method to tell if one card is acting differently?

i.e. Touch heatsink on working card vs problematic card to check if it may be a contact issue?

Dumb question. Did you try switching the two cards to see if it's the mobo slot?

My gut reaction would be cooling like you thought though, given the amount of time it takes to crash and that's the main variable here. Feel around on the card and see if there are any differences like mda said. Or you could try remounting the block.

When we were having the issues, I felt around on the underside of the board, and nothing seemed hot and barely registered as warm to the touch. both cards feel about the same temperature.

I do not believe it is the mobo slot, I had 2 sapphire 280x cards in the same spots previously and they both worked (minus them artifacting on initial driver installation, had to use beta drivers to get them to work properly).

I will redo the thermals regardless in the hopes that i don't have to disassemble the the cooling loop. to replace the card
