what do i have to do, to have 2 monitors on one computer?

i have an extra monitor, and i would love to extend my display across 2, so i could have a full shot of my car, on my desktop.
 
Well, what video card do you have? Most cards today in the $100+ range have dual display ability. You can tell if it has both the vga (blue) and dvi (white) connectors.

If you have both you can conenct two screens to your card. If both screens are vga, there are adapters to connect it to the dvi port. Most $300+ cards come with the adapter, if you didn't get one they can be $10 at newegg,.

Other ways involve two video cards. Like say you have a regular AGP video card and it can only do one monitor. You can then get a cheap PCI card for one of the upgrade slots. You'll probably want the same brand, like if you have ATI graphics stick with ATI (doesn't have to be the same model though) There can be chances for more problems this way compared to a card capable of both at once. Even worse when trying to deal with thigns like intel intergrated graphics and a PCI card.

Once you get both displays connected, the 2nd one might mirror the startup until you get to the desktop. Then you need to go to display properties and in settings tab you should see something that represents the screens with numbers. Select number 2 and then check on "extend my desktop to this monito"r. Some apps like ATI's Hydravision and Nvidia's Nview might have an automatic setup wizard with more advance settings to take care for this.
 
You can buy an ATI 9550 for about $65 and you will have all you need for your Dual display. Newegg has the Asus 9550 with the extra DVI to VGA connector for this price.
 
i have an older asus card right now, but thanks for the info, i will investigate over at newegg.
 
found a old pci card in the basement today, and have installed it. it is a diamond multimedia monster 3d2

but, my second monitor wont display anything, like it is in hibernation or something.
 
After setting up the card and connecting the monitor, did you go into display properities and extend the desktop to the second screen.
 
The dual screen stuff is standard in XP. Not so in Win 98 if I remember. You running XP?
 
no, im running win98 s.e. i think m.e has dual display setup, but when i install m.e.., it's auto driver thing throws out all of my drivers, and i get conflicts.


guess i'll just have to wait until i get a box capable of xp. lmao

I had 98 for quite awhile myself. XP has some cool stuff like burning CD's, dual monitors, etc. Anyway... I just got dual monitors working at home when I just bought a Dell 2001FP LCD. Wow it's way cool for working on things to have 2 monitors.

Anyway... maybe someday for you. :)
