Is it possible to use a touch-screen LCD from a Magellan Maestro 3100 for a side-screen mod on a case? I personally doubt I can use it... but I have one, and was hoping maybe there would be away to hook it up.

The connection cable is a very thin brown/orange strip that slides into the connection point on the board itself. It's unlike any cable I've ever seen... so probably... not.

Here is a disassembly of the Magellan --> http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=104066

If not.. well then I have a nice set of Magellan Maestro 3100 parts for sale :) :)
The power plug -- yellow plug bottom left if you're looking at the disassembly -- snapped right off inside the case, and I couldn't get it to solder back on.

My laptop hinges broke and I looked into making the screen into a second monitor. Apparently it is a pretty complicated process involving buying a circuit board to transform the signal to a standard VGA signal. I don't know much about the process personally but I concluded from my research it was much cheaper and easier to just buy a second monitor.

Generally, it's extremely difficult to get an extra LCD to work with your computer--you have to find the right controller chip, which isn't always possible. Purchasing an external screen that has a VGA, s-video, or composite input is almost always a better use of your time and money.

(incidentally, those two-screen portable DVD players are a great way to get a relatively inexpensive extra display, since they typically have a composite input)

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I figured about as much. Probably just easier (and potentially cheaper) to get a proper LCD Display that has a compatible output.

Thanks!!

Yeah if it was cheap and easy to make a laptop screen into a monitor my room would look like the consoles from the matrix. :D
