Just started OC this rig I got in April

E6600
evga 680i revised a1
Corsair 1142

FAILED at 3100 (8 mult * 387.5)
CPU at 1.4 but CPU-Z reads it as 1.38
FSB at 1550
Corsair 1142 at 2.1v at 5-5-5-15

Prime95 running for about half hour with temps steady at 54 on the cores and 60 on the CP then lock-up (frozen screen, no mouse movement, no keypress response, etc.)

I bumped voltage up to 1.475 and am running the torture test again (for starters the one that generates heat).

Look like I'm on the right track to get a 3.2 or so stable OC?

dude... set your ram to 1:1.

i'm on stock voltage, though according to speedfan it's 1.28v, with ram at 720. i'm on 3.24GHz. prime95 fails for me at 3.3, so i kept it down a bit. i'm sure it'll go higher if i add more volts to it.

btw, e6600's multiplier's at 9.
 
I was doing 8x in a misguided attempt to follow what someone else was doing to achieve a specific 3200 oc.

Right now I'm running 389 / 1556 for a 3503 OC. I've bumped the v to 1.55 and that seems to have helped since it bailed out at 1.45 last time.

Temps are getting interesting 10 minutes in at 66 on the CPU and 62 on the cores.

I think that's going to be too hot to run like that all the time in the unlikely event that it winds up being stable. Temps are down to 60/57/57 for no reason I can discern a few minutes after the higher readings above.

Fun messing with it - more fun than the other stuff I'm supposed to be doing.

Wow that got hot and fast. Cruised on up to 76C before I killed the test and shut off the heat.

I backed off to 3200 (356 / 1425) and 1.5v and it is crunching the FPU intensive tests at 65C 59/59 steady.

CPU temps can't be higher than core temps. You are actually getting over 70 on the cores.
 
LOL I can see this having a tragic ending.

Now I'm reading 65C - I'm going to ignore SpeedFan's 'core' readings...

Should I be using something else to monitor temps?

What is it that shows up in BIOS monitors?

Once I kill the process temps drop like a rock - does that reflect reality?

What's a good operating temp for a 6600?

I'm poking around trying to find out. I've checked the 'case temp' spec on Intel's look-up. 60.1C or something... but I'm not sure how to interpret that number.
 
Use Coretemp or Everest, or a newer version of Speedfan. Your temps are way too hot for having an aftermarket cooler.

Ideally you want them as low as possible. At 3.52GHz with a Tuniq Tower I load in the mid 50's. I don't know how the Zalman compares though offhand.
 
I've got it at 3200 at 1.45v at 56C and think that will survive the testing. From there I can try to drop the voltage a little bit to get down to 53 or so - I can live with that.

and 20 minutes into a 52C, 3200 @ 1.425

I'm still trying to figure out what's a reasonable load temp... wouldn't mind getting 3.4 but don't want to run 60C to do it.
 
I have a e6600 @ 3.4 and it idles around 44 and loads at 60-62 max (orthos witch gets it really hot!) and I'm at 1.46v.I'm no expert but I don't think you should have any problems if you stay around 60 degrees or so but that 76:eek: i don't think that would be good in the long run!
 
could it be your voltage? im using 1.30V at 3200MHz ,x8 , 1600fsb @1.3V , 800MHz on the 6 gig of ram sync and linked. till i figure out how to get past 3200MHz stable :(

my temps are a bit high too, but its due to not knowing how to put the AS5 on the cpu right : http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_route_step2intelas5.html , i did it thinking it was the same as a AMD64 chip. 40c idle , 53c loaded
 
I was getting crashed out at 1.4 even and had to bump it back up to dodge the math errors and BSOD dumps.

I'm pretty sure the AS was properly applied.
 
ok for my 3.2 clock this is how i have it set up as far as voltage : cpu 1.33125 , fsb 1.3 ,spp 1.3 , mcp (auto) 1.5 , spp-mcp 1.3 . these were in bios.

now im trying 3.4 8x 425 , 1700 sync & linked : cpu 1.45 , fsb 1.4, spp 1.55 , mcp (auto ) 1.5 , spp-mcp (auto ) 1.45 = idle temps around 45-46c , load with orthos for 10 min took it to 65c, :mad:

oh. for the 3.2 i had the ram at 4.4.4.15, for now the 3.4 is set to optimal and reading 425 ,1:1 , 5.6.6.20 ...vista64 with 6gigs

Big party at my place tomorrow and I'm prepping for it. (Which you know is why I'm on hardforum and screwing with OCing lol instead of getting the place ready.)

I got BSOD on these setttings.

I left them in place and bumped vcore to 1.40

Prime ran 1.5 hours and then one core had an error. Grr... I'm not sure what changes I can make (e.g. fsb to 1.4).

I may give your other settings a go.

edit: 20 minutes in at 3401 (378) @ 1.5v bios 1.45v actual temps bobbing around 58 then flame out
30 minutes into 1.5v 375 / 1500w/ temps steady at 63C
 
More volts. I had to go over 1.45 to hit 3.5GHz. I have to use 1.55 in BIOS, 1.50 actual to hold 3.7GHz stable. It works though, and temps don't even reach 60C under full load, so I'm happy.
 
I got an hour at 3375 at 1.55 running at 63C. Just a tad hot.

I don't think I can drop vcore much - I'm running at 1.5 and temps are at 60C. I'm waiting for the crash, though.

May have to drop back to 3300 and regroup.
