new xp2500+ need some advice

i just got a comp been gone for a long time.... its a
Abit NF7 nForce2chipset
AMD Athlon barton XP2500+
256mb PC-2100 memory
80gb western digital
geforce 2 gts 64mb ddr

I was just wondering also what are some programs that let me check my system info like cpu-z and that let me change the fsb multipliers while logged onto windows... and how can i successfully oc this comp a little bit to get more power on it...


i got a simple thermaltake heatsink fan cooling at 5000rpm keeping the comp at 40c i think or 30c not sure and a 400watt psu atx12v

with pc2100 ram your kind of limited I dont think youll be able to do much

and your bios is the best place to actually overclock, any windows based utilities ive tried(abit oc eq) are flakey at best

well pc2100 is 266 rated.. and a 200 ddr fsb will run it at 400..

while i doubt the ram will be able to handle it.. it never hurts to try, specially if the ram is higher end stuff

maybe if you increased the voltage a lot, but i doubt it will get to 200 even with loose timings. get some pc3200 and 2.2 GHz should be well within your reach.

jeez... may i ask how you got yours to 2.5 that seems like quite an accomplishment

not really, some people have gotten to 2.7. I have mine running at 190 x 13.5.

I had a week 17 Barton 2500+ that made it to 2.3 ghz. If that chip could do that, your chip can go past it. My brand new week 43 Mobile Barton 2600+ is at 2.5 ghz, and no end is in sight for it's potential yet!

200 fsb isn't a stretch. 200 fsb is what PC3200 is rated for. If you have PC3200, 214 fsb is a stretch. Hell, 230 fsb is a stretch, but if you get good RAM, it'll do it.

You also have to take into account that 2500 bartons can have a wide range of OCing ability just by luck of the draw. Look at the test they did here on [H] with 3 2500's bought retail from newegg all together. Each of the 3 had very different Ocing ability with one unable to reach 200x11 no matter what they did. IF its a mobile it will be alot more predictable on the OC.

Really hard to say how far you could push the system without a bit more information...and even then it is of course an educated guess. Need to know the brand/type of pc2100, need to know if that 2500 is locked or unlocked. (can check this by attempting to raise or lower the multiplier in the bios, and then checking the cpu speed with cpu-z when the OS boots)

Worst case scenario your not gonna be able to raise the speed much at all...if the processor is locked and the ram has no headroom, your kinda stuck around stock. Getting some decent pc3200 would give you a lot more to work with.
