Hi,

Tomorrow I will collect a used Xeon 5670.

I have windows and all my software installed, can I just power down and swap out my i7 920 for the 5670?

Or will I need to re install..

Also what is a good benchmarking program to bench before and after the new CPU to post results here? Something with graphs would be preferable..

Thanks!

_Luca

What motherboard? Do you have the latest bios for it? Check out the X58 Xeon thread that's active near the top of the first page of this forum section.

Asus P6T. Latest BIOS.

It would otherwise be good to go for the Xeon 5670, however I'm wanting to know if it as simple as just swapping out the CPU's in regards to drivers and software..

I have been through a lot of that massive thread but haven't found an answer in there..

Also wanting to know a benchmark program with graphical representation.

You don't normally need to worry about updating drivers or anything when you're just upgrading a CPU. You also don't need to install any software.

Thanks :). So CPU's are more bios related than driver related?

I'll be clocking it to 4.2

Any thoughts on benchmarking software??

3dmark skydiver, cinebench r15 and pass mark will all show benefits of the added cores....but yea as long as your running latest bios its a simple change out;)

Yup straight swap worked fine.

Oddly defaulted to 500bclk and 22x multi so didn't boot obviously.

Quick change to 133bclk and happy day light browsing etc for few hours.

Will run for a week, bench, OC, stabilise, bench, post results..
