New Windows Name

Vague, positive-sounding, sounds reasonably good. Fair enough.
(I kind of liked "Longhorn", though. :D)

It is not offical yet. Only suspected. Announcement from Microsoft will come later today.

Holy shit . That is the gayest OS name I've ever heard. Sans Microsoft BOB, but that wasn't a full fledged OS so it doesn't really count.

I hope to God and all things holy and right in the world that they change the name.

Ok, so here is how the life of a computer tech will sound.

Computer Tech: What OS are you running?
Customer: What's an OS?
Computer Tech: *sigh* Right click on my computer and click properties.
Customer: Right click or left on properties?
Computer Tech: *ugh* Left click is implied.
Computer Tech: What does it say for the operating system?
Customer: Microsoft *lisp* Vissssta. */lisp*.
Computer Tech: *Shudders*

:(

BTW, there's a typo on that page. It says "Arriving 2006"

Silly MS, they meant 2007. :p

I think vista would be a good name for a clear soft drink.... like umm Sprite Vista

Ah, beat me to making a thread. Longhorn sounds cool, but I don't think it would make any sense at all. I'm sure "vista" has some underlying reasoning.

I don't know how common knowledge this is, but Windows XP, the XP was for Experience. I was visiting someone in Redmond and they told me that, pre-release. Anyways, thought that was kinda cool, wondering if anyone else knew that.

It's slated for late 2006, but odd's are that will change if my suspicions are correct.

Yep, I remember hearing that. They went from Whistler, to XP, which was a step ahead.

Now they went from Longhorn (which wasn't all that great in the first place) to Vista, which IMO is a huge step back in coolness.

They may as well call it Windows Sunshine and Lollipops. :\

Yeah i remember hearing that when it first came out, but i still don't fully understand how the XP was supposed to convey that. Just sounds like a code name to me. I remember all the marketing stuff that had it. I guess we all just need to raid Microsoft's marketing department and take over. :D

well I know first thing I will be doing is hacking it to change the start up so it doesnt read Vista. I mean really what were they thinking or smoking? This name reeks of some marketing moron with a bunch of Flash cards running around trying to pick the best one when in reality they probably all sucked. I think Microsoft would have done better to have a contest to have the community name it.

i'd be willing to bet that microsoft paid a "naming consultant" a SIGNIFICANT chunk of change to come up with the name...

having worked for a couple companies before that have done name changes and branding changes, that's what usually happens...

keep something in mind... what sounds good to the [H] community (i.e. a bunch of computer wonks, who make up about 1% of user community) doesn't necessarily ring right in the ear of the other 99%...

Just thinking about it a little, it probably will sound good to corporate types and the average user. Especially to the regular computer buyer, vista sounds like something that's clear and open and easy to get around. To me, anyway. lol Then again, when i ask people what version of Windows they have when i'm helping them troubleshoot over the phone, they usually don't know. So most people probably won't notice anyway.

:(

I liked Longhorn.

<---------------

Vista is a decent "consumer" name though.

Direct from dictionary.com:

Vista: A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening,....

Distant is right.

I don't like Vista, I want something that sounds more pro-ish, and no, Windows Vista Professional won't do it.

When has Microsoft ever used a codename as the product's official name? Never...

Janus? Sparta? Daytona? Chicago? Memphis? Neptune? Cairo? Whistler? Longhorn?

I was hoping the Neptune and Whistler names stuck. Alas, they didn't.

Same goes for AMD. Clawhammer and Sledgehammer should have stayed. :)

I hated Whistler. Yuck. XP was a pretty cliche generic name, but Vista?...omg

"I'm having trouble networking Windows Vista."

That just sounds lame.

What's the next name going to be? Windows Scenery?

Ugh.

The bad thing about XP was how often those two letters were copied for other hardware and software products.

I like Longhorn better. Do you still need a special monitor to use it? Or did Microsft do away with that idea?

A special monitor? Never hard that part....

Rumor was that it would require a monitor that supported HDCP.
(That was fast downgraded to "It'll support HDCP".)

The gayest name ever.... (not that there is anything wrong with being gay ;))
It's even worse then Windows Millenium as much of a POS OS that was....
MS has lost it for sure this time.

Agreed. With such a generic name it was easy to throw "XP" in with a hardware name and confuse the novices.

But VISTA!? C'MON! Damned you MS.

"XP" was the store-brand of a norwegian supermarket chain when Win XP arrived.
