I have a quick question. I just purchased the new WD Raptor 150 SATA HD. My question: Can I use this and an IDE HD as the Slave? My thoughts were to install the SATA HD and load windows then hook up the Slave HD with the IDE cable set in the slave mode. Or do I hook it up as the IDE master....Any thoughts. Thanks
 
As long as your not booting from the IDE, then I dont think it matters which config you put it in (ie master/slave or secondary or master channel). Just make sure you have the ide cabels setup benifiting cable organization, and I think your golden.
 
You do know that the Raptor is a SATA drive which means it has no slave/master relationship, right? Each sata drive runs on it's own cable straight to the motherboard/controller. Unless you are planning on converting the SATA interace on the raptor to an IDE one , you cannot run a slave drive off it.

You mis-read..he's saying he has a raptor 150, and has a IDE drive and was wondering if he could hook it up as a slave drive so he could use it in windows as an alternate drive. Right ATLMOBO?
 
The IDE should be hooked up as master if it is the only IDE drive in the system....
the SATA is on its own controller.
The IDE will have no affect on the SATA drive...

So yeah, hook it up as master and use the SATA to boot from, and the IDE for storage or whatever.....
 
the master/slave thing is really a misnomer, as it has no relation to priority, AFAIK.

The raptor is SATA, its a 1 device per channel standard.
IDE runs 2 devices pre channel (max), usually with 2 channels per controller.

If you are running the IDE drive on its on cable, set it as master, but it really doesn't matter either way.
If you are running a single optical drive, and want to save yourself a cable, set the HDD as master and the optical as slave on the same cable.
If you are running 2 opticals, run them as master/slave on their own cable and set the HDD as master on its own cable.
