New VMware Server need recommendation for mobo

Hi guys,

been reading the threads related to Virtualized Computing for a while now.
It's time to build my first server and i have a question regarding the mobo.
I am between the Supermicro X8SIL-F and the Intel S3420GPLC.
I see that everybody recommends the Supermicro but i cannot find it anywhere near my location.

Are there huge differences between the two that could impact proper ESXi installation and further playing around?

Looking at those two options I think I would go with the Intel but it's about $30 more on average. They look like they are virtually the same board with some small differences in the slot configuration and back panel connections. The NICs look to be supported which has always been the crux for me when building these systems.

What hardware are you planning to add to it to finish the build out? I'm looking at rebuilding my current box which is currently running on a Gigabyte desktop board with two PCI intel NICs, booting from usb, and connected to a QNAP NAS via NFS over dedicated Gbit connection.
 
I am planning to use a xeon 3430 with 8GB of RAM to start.
Storage will be inside the machine using the onboard controller with OpenIndiana and Napp-it.
I will use a USB stick to boot the ESXi.
One issue here is the sata controller and if it is supported by ZFS-flavored storage solutions like OpenIndiana.
