Ok, so I'm getitn my new computer tomorrow. 3700+ San Diego, MSI NeoPlat. 4 SLI, 1gb OCZ PR2, 74gb Raptor, NEC 3520A DVD Burner, XP-90C, Audigy 2 Gamer, and the Silverstone TJ05S-X Case...now i just need to pick the right video card. Right now, I have my config with the BFG 6800GT. But ive looked at benchmarks and now i cant decide between the 6800gt, x800xl, or the x850xt. I play mainly Day of Defeat (Source when it comes out) HL2, NFSU2, a little Doom, and Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (hey its fun buildin roller coasters :p) so which card do u think i should get....i saw the x850xt is priced at 400 bucks on newegg which i think is a good deal so im kinda leanin towards that.
 
get one 6800 GT pci express card for now then later buy another. i assume u planned on going sli since you bought a sli motherboard.
 
If you plan on playing source games a lot the x800xl is a good bargain at ~279 USD. It will hold you over nicely until the next gen cards come down to a reasonable price.

edit: I'm not sure investing in a 6800gt sli setup is the most prudent option considering that one g70 or r520 will probably best it in the near future.
 
get the x850xt..its only 400 if ya can afford it :)
otherwise get the 6800gt if it is priced similarly witht teh XL, if not, get the XL
 
The prices that I have are as follows:

6800GT for 390
x800xl for 310
x850xt for 400 a one day sale on newegg for the sapphire version

The only reason why i considered the x850xt is because its on sale and is very close in price to the 6800gt. I saw reviews for it and saw that it beat the 6800gt in everything but Doom3 which i dont even play that much. So i think that might be what ill get. But does anyone know how "soon" the R520 and G70s will be out?
 
hrmm...for future upgrades?? would it just be wiser to go with an Ultra version of the board?? i guess i did want to use SLI but with the cheap deal on the ATI card i wont have a need...umm...would it be better to get the MSI or DFI version of the Ultra board?

Your pick of the BFG 6800GT was a fine one, you should stick with it :)

Getting an SLI motherboard is a smart bet also. It allows you to nearly double your performance when not CPU limited, and if you buy one now it means you can SLI a second 6800GT later or better yet two G70s when they come out this fall and have the fastest video performance there is!

Where did those prices come from?
I just looked at 6800 GT PCI Express cards on Pricewatch and you can get a retail XFX from
Monarch for $368.00 and a retail eVGA from Monarch for $376.00 including shipping.
 
those prices are all from newegg...hrmmm so i SHOULD get SLI and get the 6800gt?? yarr...decisions decisions!! lol...really its between the 6800gt and the x850xt

Hmm... that's interesting. I'm now eager for manufacturers to stop talking (Cell this, Rambus that) and start delivering some much needed benchmarks. Better yet, let some of the hardware websites *cough* [H] *cough* review these things and take them apart and see what they're made of... :D

Pretty nice, might have gone for something cheaper on the memory & vid card though. BFG's good but usually costs too much for the name.
 
actually the RAM and Video Card i thought i got a good deal on. The RAM was only 185 (as opposed to 275 last month) and the video card was 380 after a 30 dollar rebate...so IMO i picked up a good deal...but then again, what do i know :p
 
Not a bad price on that BFG, I haven't seen many of those by any brand for less than 350. There's memory for around 100 that'll work as well or better though.

I disagree!!! BFG isn't just a name. They back up there cards with leading tech support and one hell of a warranty, plus as a bonus they are pre-overclocked. That is why I spent the extra $40, so that if something happens, (like when my AIW radeon 7500quit working and my MSI GF3 died and my PNY 5700 ultra died) I dont have to deal with being without a card for months. I guess I never tried PNY but from what I had heard it was a waste of my time. BFG built by gamers for gamers.

Solid stuff all around. I have the same DVD recorder and it is awesome...NEC just released some new firmware last week that enables DVD-R DL on it too.
 
oh yea i forgot to ask, will i have to update the BIOS for my motherboard to work with the san diego core?? and do i still need to do that F2 driver thing when installing windows??
 
AFAIK it works to an extent without a BIOS flash but you need to flash it with a newer revision to get full compatability. DFI on the other hand, already fully compatable, although still need to flash over different issues.

I didn't need to do that driver thing, try it without first and then mess with it if that doesn't work.
 
Careful, I read over at DFIS that the MSI SLI Plat (also Diamond) requires a -5V line in order to work properly- I think it might be the Live! that acts up without it. The NeoPower doesn't have that rail, you might be better off with a ModStream if you want the modular.

Yep, page 24 of the PDF manual for the Platinum says:

Again proving that DFI users are all spoiled and have no idea of the crap users of other companies' motherboards have to put up with...
 
I wouldn't say we're spoiled, I've already lost three boards to BIOS corruption (two NF2s and an NF3). However, it's certainly more tolerable than some of the other companies' crap, especially when you take into account that we get some of the highest overclocks as a tradeoff. It's a small price to pay, IMO- my old Asus P4P800 had its share of problems, meaning I had to RMA three boards in a row when the chipset's memory controller died.
 
hrmmm hopefully that wont matter if i disable onboard since im usin a PCI Sound card?? or am i just screwed?
 
The manual doesn't say it's just for sound, so I'm going to venture a guess and say you're screwed. Just get a different PSU and you'll be fine.
 
ive seen some people runnin the plat. SLI with a neopower so ill just cross my fingers and hope it works lol...
 
That, or if it has you paranoid I believe Newegg's policy on refused shipments is to refund it completely including cost of shipping. So if you don't mind the extra wait you could just refuse the package & reorder. But check their help page first. ^_^
 
hmmm i ordered my PSU from monarch so maybe they have the same policy :p well i guess ill have to see if it works and if not, then ill have to RMA it...can i exchange a product with something else when i RMA? this will be my first time so im lost about the whole process.

Don't suppose you're up for changing the motherboard instead? My Ultra-D is running just fine on a NeoPower.

Newegg's kinda unusual about that policy, usually you're out at least the shipping cost, possibly a restocking fee.

Usually you can't RMA one product for another but sometimes they'll let you. If nothing else you can often get away with an RMA Refund - restocking fee & reorder, if it comes down to that.
 
so ur sayin that its easier to exchange different motherboards than power supplies?? bleh...i wish i could have stayed away from this kind of situation..i guess i didnt do enough research...
 
If your current PSU & motherboard won't work properly together, & the motherboard's the one you can return easily, I'd go with that. Ultra-D overclocks better anyway.
 
ah i see....hmmm well if it doesnt work out then i guess i can try to RMA the motherboard and then get a DFI one...i just heard DFI had some stability issues and MSI was the best OCing/Stable ratio motherboard
