Hey guys, I currently have a HIS 9800 Pro Video card <128MB> and was pondering an upgrade to a 6600GT, do you think I will notice enough of a difference to justify the price? I do play HL2, Doom 3 etc occasionally.

Thanks,

Novensu

I say upgrade, but go for 6800GT instead. 6600GT wouldn't be worth spending the dough for.

i went from a 5900xt @ 505/975 to a 6800GT and i have to say i can tell a difference for shure in my games but not near enough to warrant the 400 dollars i should have waited for the refresh :(

i second that. your 9800 pro is a fine card. If you upgrade to anything, it should be a X800XL at the lowest, but a 6800GT would be ideal. that's what I'm getting and I have the near same setup as you.

I did the same exactly the same. A 6800GT is the minimum I would recommend, and it is definately a differnce, just not a $400 change. I just think you're going to plug in a 6600GT and say, "ok, what is the big deal". Save your money or add a few tweaks to get your PC ready for teh next gen. RAM, 1GB if you don't already have it, Athlon 64 update, faster hard drive - you know, tweak it so that it is not the bottleneck for next gen cards.

Good luck!

Another recommendation for the 6800GT. I dont think the 6600 will give you the performance returns you are looking for where the 6800GT would.

It's like upgrading from a 6800 GT to a 6800 Ultra. The 6600 GT is better than the 9800 pro but not by that much. It might be more future proofed etc. with SM 3.0... but honestly just wait for the next refresh. 9800 pro runs today's games amazingly. By the time it won't, the new cards will be out.

I went from as follows.. gforce4 mx420 in acrap compaq to9200 to x300seeeee to 6600gt to x800xl.
For me upgrades were neccasary and when I got 6600gt I said wtf lemme go up some more.
For u hmm If its not bothering u then wait!!
My vote goes no.

6600GT is the one for the budget minded gamer. They are funny old cards though, mine actually gets faster fps with a slight ram underclock?? go figure!!

wait for the R520,m your card is fine for now.

Im waiting, and I have an MX440SE :(

yeah wait. im waiting for the r520 to come out so the 6800 series and the x800 series prices can drop.

I just upgraded because I was tired of my 5900 being raped in DX9 games, 17 FPS raped. If you still have playable or what you consider playable frame rates then save your money.

At least you coulod USE Dx9

:(

I still think the 9800 Pro is a good ass card.... I would deffinatly wait until either the R520 comes out and you can get top of the line then. Or Still wait till the R520 comes out and drives prices of the X8xx series down drastically.

Guys thanks for the input,

I was leanning towards no, but wanted a second opinion and could think of no better place to get it. :D

you can get 100 bucks for you card on ebay and get a 6600gt for just 50 more. I would do it and then upgrade yet again when R520 or G70 - 80 arives
