i got a new video card x850xt that needs a 4 pin adapter for extra power. but i dont have any extra connecters from my antec 480. is it bad that my cd drive, hardrive and vid card are all split off the same wire? would it be better to use a adapter and connect the vid card to a fan 3 pin on my mobo? thx

Generally, since video cards can be real power mongers, having a separate run to the VC is the best idea. It also solves some trouble shooting later. If you absolutely do not have enough separate rails free, try to connect it to the least used one (in terms of amps, rather than number of physical devices) or shuffle things around if possible.

A modern hard drive, however, doesn't use that much power. Usually under 500mA during operation and peak of under 10W.. still..

First a few questions:
Is your new X850XT AGP or PCIE Im taking it that yours is the Radeon X850XT correct, the reason I ask is that ATI did at one time have a X850 series Graphics card that was PCIE.
Which Antec 480 PSU is it?
If your not sure or don't remember, ((depending on how long you have had in your system)) you can use the link I put in to go to the Antec site and look at all the 480 watt PSU's they have and see if any of them look like yours. Also you can check the specs on yours as it will be there. Now if you have the Neopower 480 it does have a PCIE which should be marked.

Also as sordid has said yes you could do as he said,,, BUT it would not be wise, at all and or your Graphics card may not even power up because it is not getting the proper amount of amps. Also I might add that with these types of power hungary cards, you really must follow the specs as outlined in the user manual and provide the proper connections, so you have a good working VC and that you do not damage it in any way. Because if you don't follow what the manufacurer requiers and you damage it, then you will have lost hard earned cash you spent getting.
