So 9600 GT I believe my is kicking the can (i.e., speed fan reads the GPU temperature up to 130 C never OC'd. so to work around I took off the side panel of my case and stuck a room fan in the side.) I tried compressed air to clean out dust and used a Q-tip on the blades, but it didn't help improve the stock cooling.

Anyway, barring any new advice that could bring my current card into working order, I'm in the market for a new one.

Fyi, my current set up is
  • CPU - E6750
  • RAM - Samsung 800 mhz 2x1GB
  • MOBO - GA-P35-DS3L
  • Case - Antec Sonta III (w/ Earthwatts 500 W psu)

I run at 1920x1080 resolution.

I'm considering the 5770 HD The card is around my budget, and can apparently play it SC on Ultra quality.

Thoughts? Good idea? Bad idea?

Thanks for your help.

if your considering the 5770 id say take a look at the 6850 instead. should be right around the same price and better performance.

first of all. E6750 and 800mhz rated ram go great together, raise the fsb to 400 and enjoy your 3,2ghz on stock cooler and voltage. This is a better cpu speed for avoiding bottlenecking your GPU

If you only play SC2, a 5770 is probably enough for your needs. Id go for a cheap 460gtx 768mb though, it performs better in the more GPU limited games, and its not much more expensive - it also overclocks like a boss

I mostly play SC2 these days, but I do a lot of DA:O, COD4, ME2 (and ME3 when it comes out).

The 6850 1 GB and the 460 GTX 768 MB both look pretty good for what I want to do.

OC'ing would be nice if it's a sure thing; any articles you know of off the top of your head where people show successful OCs on these parts?

Thanks for the responses!

If you can push your budget to get a 6850, it is a good choice.

Here's an OC review. http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/core_2_duo_e6750_review/13.html Granted, it might be an engineering sample, but the results are pretty much what you can find in enthusiast forum threads.

I can recommend overclocking that particular cpu because I have one myself (my rig in sig).
I originally bought mine to because it was the best value cpu and capable of a sick OC - which I concluded from a bunch of reviews back then. And it works brilliantly. I haven't tried the higher clocks with extra voltage, but its running smoothly for me at 3,2ghz with no additional voltage and a couple of degrees up from normal on the stock cooler.
The P35 chipset works great with the E6750 (my asus mobo has it, and many of the reviews use it). I dont know about your Samsung ram, but they are rated at 800mhz so they are certified to give you 400fsb 1:1 ratio unless they are faulty.

6850 deals very nicely with Starcraft 2. You'll still be limited by your CPU though, so you want to try overclocking that, since it will give you much greater bang for the buck when it comes to SC2. The GTX 460 1GB is the proper NVidia alternative to the 6850, so you can consider that as well.

No idea. I haven't even toyed with that idea with my GTX 275 since it would be bringing my framerate below 60fps.

oh aa af is pretty good on sc2
but for some reason you can't force aa af on amd ati cards
eh

So I didn't go out right away and buy a new card (still looking at that 6850 for the future though), and glad i didn't. I had this idea that maybe the card wasn't dusted completely. This time, I took my card out of my mobo and blew compressed air directly across the fins of the heat sink. MASSIVE amounts of dust began to fly out. This was progress! I put the card back in, and my idling temperature dropped from 75 C down to 41 C!! Also when playing SC2, the temp never even breaks 60 C! (also, I no longer need a space fan blowing the in the side of my computer)

Anyways, a lot of you guys have been mentioning OCing my cpu. I've only OC'd one of my chips in the past, and am not comfortable doing so without instruction. Any guides you could recommend to help me out?

Thanks!

Lol, reminds me of my encounter with a spongy wall of dust settled in my cpu cooler. Cleaning that out gave3 me aprox. 40 C lower idle and load temps :p

I've had a look at the manual of your mobo.

You should go into "MB Intelligent Tweaker"

CPU Host Clock Control - turn this on
CPU Host Frequency - this should be 333 mhz, increase it to 400 mhz
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) - set this to 2.0, which should run your ram at 800mhz

That's basicly it for upping your cpu to 3,2ghz. You should also turn off C1E and EIST in the advanced bios settings if they give you trouble with your overclock.
This should help a lot for SC2, It did for me :)

edit: and dont forget to clean your cpu cooler too, lol
