new video card causing high cpu usage

After installing my new radeon 5750, hardware interrupts were suddenly consuming nearly 50% of the cpu time, according to process explorer. This happend with drivers installed and not installed. I've tried the following and nothing has worked:
- uninstalling old drivers, running driver sweeper from windows safe mode and installing new driver after.
- clearing cmos rtc ram.
- disabling hardware in the device manager : dvdr drive, floppy disk controller, onboard firewire, onboard ethernet, onboard serial and parallel ports, onboard sound, pci sound card, game controller port, usb wifi adapter
- removing and reseating the video card.

Specs of my machine
Asus A8R-MVP, 939 socket motherboard
Athlon 64 X2 dual core 3800+
2 x 1gb ddr 400 ram in dual channel config
Samsung 500gb HE502IJ hd (sata, bios set to emulated pata mode for both)
LG GH22LS50 dvdr (sata)
pci sound card, device manager reports it as a CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device
old video card: Sapphire Radeon X1300
new video card: PowerColor Radeon 5750
 
just out of curiousity. check and see if you accidently installed FAH(folding@home) and have it running in the background. it would cause it to use a single cpu core. it was set to preinstall in older driver versions if you didnt uncheck the option but it shouldnt automatically turn on. just an idea.

in your task manager/processes is it showing anything using that core?
 
not that this helps but that cpu of yours is going to severally limit a 5750 in modern games. of course it was a massive upgrade from that x1300 but you are not even going to get half of what a 5750 can do in cpu intensive games. heck the 3800 X2 does not even meet the minimum requirements to play games such as Bad Company 2.
 
I have a Q9550 quad., w/ a 5870, and in BC2, even w/ this setup, the 4 quad. cores ALL vary from 70 - 99 percent in usage.....it definitely is a cpu intensive game.

it wont be that bottlenecked in games. its not like the 5750 is a blazing fast card. that system should easily play source games and the crappy COD4-6. but either way this still doesnt help him fix his problem.

a 3800 X2 is very slow in general for many newer games and yes it will severally limit a 5750 in many cases.
 
"OMG bottleneck"-ers jumping in, and reporting a bottleneck. Of course totally unconcerned it has nothing to do with what OP asked.

I checked, I don't have Folding@Home running in the background. Task Manger doesn't show the high cpu usage at all, only ProcessExplorer does.

To the "OMG bottleneck"-ers yes, I know.

Crazy theory: now that you have gotten a new card, you've increased the graphic seettings, resulting in the increased cpu usage.

I believe he's saying it's happen while out of games too.

Have you tried taking out the new card and putting the old one back in? That could help you tell if it's a specific problem with the new card. Since you have an older motherboard you might want ot update the BIOS. There have been reports of issues with newer cards on S939 motherboards(specifically Nforce 4 based) due to some kind of PCI-Express incompatibility.

Sorry I wasn't clear. This problem occurs whether I'm playing games or not. With the old card, hardware interrupts use only a few percent cpu time at most.

I was hopping to avoid flashing the bios, due to the risk, but I suppose I could. BTW, my motherboard uses the ATI Xpress 200 chipset and a ALI M1575 southbridge (according to cpu-z).

Well, after flashing the bios to version 0605 and booting sucessfully two times, I uninstalled the video card drivers, removed the video card, installed the new video card and got ... a blank screen. No POST beeps, or keyboard lights flashing, no windows boot chime. I tried the reset button a few times, but that didn't work. Next I cleared the cmos ram and also got nothing. I reinstalled the old video card and still got nothing. I removed a sound card, and then a stick of ram and still got nothing both times.

Well, I think that beta bios 0605 (the most recent available) was causing the boot problems. I manged to boot enough to flash back to the previous bios version 0503 and get my comp up again with the old video card (ati x1300). Ugh. Back to square one.

its probably a bios issue that doesnt support it. you might be SOL with that card running on that system.
 
I returned the card, thinking it was defective and asked newegg to send me a replacement. It also didn't work until I installed bios 0603 on my motherboard. yeah! Now it works :) FYI, bios version 0605 (the most recent) caused problems booting up reliably. And 0602 also did not work (see first post for specifics).
