new vid card necessary?

i have a nvidia geforce fx 5700le and when i bought it last year, i didnt know much about video cards. i was wondering if its necessary for me to get a new one, and which one specifically would be best, in order to run some of the higher end games available.

anyway, heres my system:

asus k8v se deluxe
athlon 64 3200+
2gb crucial ram (forgot any specifics)
200gb sata hdd
dell 2405fpw

those should be all the parts that matter anyways. id like to play hl2/cs:s and bf2 at 1900x1200 so what kinda card am i looking at? should i wait some time for a nicer card to come out? what about price...how much am i looking at spending realistically?

also id prefer if the card had 2 dvi slots since i plan on buying another 2405 sometime in the near future.

it depends on your budget. if it's under $200, your best option would be a 6800NU, but im not sure if that would be worth the upgrade. if you can go higher, get an X800XL for under $300, or a 6800GT for a bit more. as for the $400 range, the 7800GT AGP should come out in a few months, and you should see a substantial improvement going with that.
 
budget isnt too much of an issue, i think the $4-500 range would be my limit (do they make video cards that cost much more than that?).
 
Since you have an AGP port, you will probably not be able to obtain any of the 7800 series cards in the near future. You may just want to save some money and examine the ATI X800XL or nVidia 6800GT. They both deliver great performance for the money. For a little bit above the new purchase price of the aforementioned video cards, you may want to view the For Sale forum and look for a used X800XT or X800XTPE (fastest card for AGP) that can occaisionally be found as many upgrade to the 7800GTX.

Before you venture down this upgrade path, also examine your power supply to insure that it can handle the additonal load.
 
If you want to play BF2 and HL2 at 1900x1200 with good frame rates I would suggest one of the best AGP cards out there.

That means ATI right now.

A 6800 Ultra might do the job in BF2, but it will not do as well as an ATI card in HL2.

A 6800 GT will overclock and become an Ultra if you are lucky. 65% chance of that.

First I'd like to say holy crap is your system handicapped by that card :p. If you want to go out, go for the X850XTPE, it is the fastest AGP card out there. If you want to go a little cheaper, get the 6800GT as it overclocks like a mother and give great framerates at any clock. HL2 isnt that graphically intensive (so to speak) so any of the cards mentioned should do fine with it. BF2 might need the x850XTPE to run 1920x1200 though :eek:
