Just pulled the trigger on a upgrade for my current rig (in signature) to:

- Intel Core i7 2600K
- ASUS P8P67 Deluxe REV3.0
- G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL8-8-8-24 1.5V
- Noctua NH-D14 HSF

I use my computer primarily for gaming but I single monitor game @ 1920x1080.

I'm on the fence regarding video card. I don't have any loyalties to brand, just performance. I'd prefer to keep my setup single GPU (I'm cautious of microstutter), so should I just go ahead and grab a GTX 580? Should I go 3GB?

It sounds like you are self convinced already.

The 580 is very fast. I did own one and I took it back to save a little money and got a 6970..............then another ........... then a 6990 sigh..

Anyways I would recommend a 6970, 570 or 580 (budget allowable of course).

If you want to save a little more. The absolute best bang for the buck from both manufacturers I believe is the AMD 6950.

I'm actually pretty open, I had a Powercolor 6990 carted for a while but I saw some youtube videos exhibiting the card's noise levels at load and I was fairly disturbed by it. Plus there's the issue of availability.

I'm also very keen on the MSI R6970 Lightning, but NC IX doesn't have a SKU for it, newegg.ca is out of stock (tiger direct has it for 450, but that much for a 6970...)

So I'm very much just trying to weigh pro's and cons right now.

Edit: tangoseal, any microstuttering issues with your current setup or when you had 2x 6990?

I agree that the ref HD6950 2Gb is the holy grail for value/preformance .. i just pick up a HIS ref card last week for $284 shipped and used the techpower up link to flash it and unlock the shaders/core clocks which was so easy and now i have a HD6970 at the price.

My trusty 5870 is able to run playable framerates in any game at 1920x1080 with max settings. However I'm in the upper 30's in Crysis and lower 30's in Metro. If I had the money, I'd jump on a GTX580 in a second. Yes its overkill for 95% of the games out there but I want as much eye candy as I can get and as close to 60 fps as I can get and the 580 is the card to have.

If you can't swing $500, a 6970 will definitely crush anything at that resolution and save you $150.
