Hello!

I am about to upgrade and finally get a HDTV, yet I am still debating on which one to purchase. I was thinking about getting a DLP or and LCD, since I can’t afford the plasma.

My TV budget is slightly above 3000 (but i would prefur not to be that high, but it is plausable) but that needs to cover the TV, Stand, and an extended warrenty for the TV. The TV wil be used for videogames (xbox, ps2, gamecube, plus next generation consoles) as well as watching lots of DVDs. Here is my current list:

DLP's

I've got the Samsung HLP4674W and I love it. (46 inch DLP) The HLP4674W uses the HD2+ DLP chip instead of the HD3 chip that is used in other Samsung models like the HLP5063. The HD2+ chip produces a sharper picture and has better black levels. The Toshiba set that you listed also uses the HD2+ DLP chip but I was opposed to having speakers on the side of the TV.

I considered purchasing a Sony LCD rear projection set until I realized that the non standard resolution used by the TV causes you to loose about 3% of the image on all sides. (Cropped) I also found out the Sony does not support displaying a true digital image. Even if you use HDMI or DVI, the Sony set still performs an analog to digital conversion before the image is displayed.

The HLP4674W's native resolution is 1280*720 which is precisely what a 720p HD image is. If you use DVI or HDMI with the Samsung it will display the original 720p HD image without performing any type of analog to digital conversion. (Digital all the way to the screen) I've compared the HLP4674W to a number of plasmas and the PQ is better on this DLP than all but the most expensive plasmas when an HD image is displayed. I'll be the first to admit that the HLP4674W does not display non-HD content as good as some other TVs, but HD and DVD content is perfect and that’s all I’m interested in. (The HLP4674W works great as a PC monitor too)

FYI: They also produce a 56 inch version of this TV called HLP5674W. I've heard that they are selling the 56 inch model at Costco's in the Bay Area. (w/stand included) Very few of these TVs were produced due to the high cost of the HD2+ chip so you'll need to act fast it you want one. I spoke to customer service at Costco and they confirmed that their lifetime satisfaction clause does apply to these TVs so you won’t need an extended warranty. They then stepped back from that assertion and advised that after 8-10 years they may refuse to provide a replacement TV since that is that "normal operating expectancy" of a TV.

I don't know why you would want an LCD or DLP when RP CRT still provides a far superior image, longer life, lowest maintenance, and does so at a much lower price point.

Size and weight. 30" CRT is like 150 lbs :eek:
