New Toy :)

Hey guys, just picked up a new toy for $50

In very good condition, some of the keys are peeling a bit (S,D,C,N,V), but it has a backlit keyboard, HDD seems to be good also. The screen is yellowing a bit, but that doesn't bother me a bit.

Specs are: PowerBook G4, 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 and 512MB MB DDR SDRAM - I'm ordering another 1GB stick right now.

Couple problems and questions. First comes first, when I open Safari, it sometimes crashes when going on certain sites like searching on google or similar. Safari crashes, not to computer itself. Any idea what this might be? Just the computer not being able to handle the newer browser data at this point?

Also, I would like to upgrade the OS, obviously only to Leopard. Do I have to do anything to get to Leopard at this point or can I just get a Leopard disc and reinstall the OS?

The 1.25GHz isn't the fastest, but I just want to be able to surf, download a bit and do some small word processing so I think this will be perfect for me.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

I'm wondering if it is an HTML5 issue. I'm really just wanting to make sure that I don't put any money into this thing if it has larger issues, but since the computer itself isn't crashing and it's the browser I'm thinking I should be good to go.

Anyone know if or where I can get a more up-to-date browser for this computer? This computer is currently running 10.3.9 so I'm thinking I may be a little hopeless there

That's why I would like to find Leopard and get that running.

The best browser for PowerPC Macs is TenFourFox. But if you have 10.3.9 you're out of luck

I really want to make this thing work because it's extremely clean for it's age and works well.

I ordered 1GB RAM and hoping to get Leopard on it, hopefully that'll liven it up and make it do all that I need it for, for now

Weird coincidence, today there were two threads on the Apple subreddit talking about owners coming into used G4 laptops.

A common piece of advice in those threads is to install an SSD, performance and usability jumps exponentially.

Hmm, honestly it runs good as is, that's on the original OS install from the factory also. The guy I bought it from just used it and deleted the files, didn't even log himself out of Facebook

Maybe I'll look into getting an SSD, put OS X Leopard on it and use it with 1.5GB Ram.

Honestly, using it now, this PowerBook is way ahead of it's time, being 8-ish years old.

Any suggestions on where I could get Leopard at for a decent price other than ebay and amazon?
