Okay this is my first "L". Man I did not know how much I was missing. It was hard to decide between this and the 24-70 f/2.8. After a lot of research, comparing, feeling, etc, IS range and weight won.

And this(pic below) is using my "L", 1/10sec ISO 800 without flash in a moderate lit living room at night, f/4.0

Thats a lotta bling, what camera r u using a 20D-5D? In your oppinion what lens would you recommend thats under $500

Depends on what you shoot. If you want wide angle, I recommend the Tamron 17-35 f/2.8. It is sharp, and has great IQ. If you want a decent walk around camera, then i recommend the Canon 17-85 f/3.5 IS (IS is nice), or if you want a all around camera that is good at everything, is the Sigma 18-200. I am about to sell my Sigma 18-200, it is great when there is light. But in low light conditions, you need to use flash. Also it is not a great lens if you are into sports shooting. But for the price, it is hard to beat.
