Hi All
I have decided to build my first water cooling system and i require a little help please.
First of all im buying a Swifttech APEX extreme kit + a vga block mcw55 + 2 1/2" barbs needed for the water block because of the APEX 7/16" ID tube.
My case is a TT Tsunami with a window so this could get interesting :D

My first question is will i require extra tube?
What are best clamps to use and why? How many?
PFTE Tape is this required?
I have attached a picture of my proposed system does this look ok? I have followed swifttech guide pump - vga - rad - cpu - res - pump

Please help!

First off, the Swiftech Apex extreme kit now comes with the Micro Res, which doesn't go in a drive bay. It has to mount upright, do you have room for it next to your hdd cage or 5 1/4 bays?

You may require a little extra tubing, but the kit comes with a good bit. I'd say 4 extra feet just to be safe.

The kit comes with the plastic clamps for every connection, I think they work okay but not as good as worm-drive metal clamps.

One thing about your illustration...the outlet for the pump is the top connector, and it would be a pretty tight loop to put that on the VGA block. I'd go from the pump to the rad to the cpu to the vga, but whatever causes the least amount of kinking is best.
 
well i was thinkin his illustration shows least kinking AND least tubing used. whic i ithink is a good idea. yea it wouold be awesome to go to the rad directly before or after the CPU but it really seems that lease amount of plastic tubing is best.

also the storm kit comes with all the clamps you need for hte parts in the kit, so you usually would need 2 more if you add the vga block. me, i struggled with it for a bit, even ordered clamps, they werent as tight in clamping as the ones with the kit were, so i got fed up and used zip ties as my worklog partner did. and they work great. just taking them off might be an issue... being that you need to cut them and not cut your tubing :O

I did consider pump - rad- cpu - vga - res, but i wasnt sure if it was best option.
The swifty kit i am getting has the older 5"1/4 bay res :)
I will get four feet of hose and a few worm clamps, what size worm clamps ? 15mm?

hose thickness plus diameter of barb should be about 5/8", or just shy of 16mm.

so, if the kit is old and has the bayres, then it also has the storm block, yeah? good on you.
 
Through about 6 months and 2 rebuilds of my comp, I've found a couple things: the least amount of tubing is good, but keep in mind accessing other things like your ram or mobo connectors. With any good pump, some extra tubing won't really matter, indeed it can even eliminate tight bends which is a good thing. Also, consider using a T-line rather than the res. I ditched my res mostly out of space necessity, and although it does take a lot longer to bleed, it makes it much easier to fill and to empty, which I've done more times than I thought I'd ever need to. Hope it helps, enjoy the water cooled goodness, I hear that storm block it the best.

substitute the term leak test for bleeding the air out, and it sounds a whole lot better. :D

I cannot get the older kit now so the apogee and micro res are going to change my setup design a little :(
I understood the apogee was better?
 
That setup is a bit out of wack, but yes I agree it is probably best looking and uses less tubing. One issue I see is the pump output goes directly to the res. I don't know enough to say if it will hurt, but I imagine it will try to pressurise the res a bit.
 
pressure is constant throughout the loop (except for very, very minor deviances). All the pump is doing really is circulating the water.
 
This makes more sense to me (assumes you move the reservoir down to the lowest 5 1/4" bay)...

Ah i see pump to res would cause loss of pressure.
I am a bit sad to hear to apogee is not as good a the Storm.
Should i try and find a older storm kit then?

depends on your goals. i would look for a kit with the 6002 block, as that was always a cheap block, has been discontinued, (and therefore some places might have it on clearance) and also outperforms the apogee.
