So I finally decided to get a Steam account setup, downloading a game right now and I've noticed that while the speeds do not max out my connection, but sometimes the download drops to 0 KB/sec for a while sometimes, then goes back up to it's normal 500ish KB/sec speed. Is it normal for the download to drop like that?

Steam is getting Hammered right now with all the Sales going on. Ive been using steam for years & my normal speed is 1.6mbps sometimes higher. I downloaded mass effect 2 in 10 hours wich is not normal at all & a friend of mine is downloading Dragon age Ultimate Ed & it sais around 1.5 days.

as of right now im seeing speeds around 200-600ish KBPS

Change your Download Location.
Go to Settings > Downloads> Download Region: Choose something close to you or next-closest to you.

Yeah, it's a busy time for the Steam Servers. A lot of popular titles on sale, plus all the people who got new computers for Christmas and are re-downloading the games from their account. It'll get better in a few days. Steam servers can usually max out most modest internet connections under normal conditions.

Getting hammered by all of the deals for the holidays. Will likely be that way for a few more days.

Or something far away. Sometimes my local server is the slow one and changing it to somewhere in Europe or Asia helps.

Ah, download location. Will play with that now.
