New to overclocking, suggestions?

I've never overclocked before, and I'll be building a new system with Phenom II X4 810 BE CPU. I intend to try to overclock it, but I will definitely not be doing any major overclocking.

My question is, do I need to buy a heatsink if I want to overclock it at all?
If so, are there any suggestions?
Tips on overclocking for the first time?

I think everybody would at least recommend getting a basic upgrade from the OEM cooler. OEM coolers in general have fairly abysmal performance and are designed to cool only at stock speeds.

Cheaper is not always better.I have the Thermalright IFX-14 and when my fans are not running my i7920 runs at 2.80 and my idle temps are 104f.Load temps are at 134f.

Take this in mind when deciding on what heatsink to get.

Xigmatek HDT-S1283. It's fairly inexpensive for a good heatsink, and should be sufficient for any overclocking you might do.

^^This. Great heatsink. It's been keeping this sig rig overlocked for 18 months and the rig is very solid.
